Kaimana program awards funds to schools, athletes
School principals, athletic directors, students and family members came from across the state to the Hawaii Convention Center recently to honor Hawaii’s top high schools and the finest scholar athletes at the 2014 Hawaii Medical Service Association Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program luncheon.
The Kaimana program, which started in August 2005, recognizes all-around accomplishments by high schools and rewards individual student athletes with scholarships. It’s sponsored by HMSA and administered by the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
Twenty-one students received scholarships worth $3,000. Five of those students were named distinguished scholars and received an additional $2,000 each.
Thirty high schools were recognized for achieving the highest program scores in their league and division in athletics, academics, sportsmanship and community service. The 10 highest-scoring schools received a check for $1,500.
Winning high schools in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I were first, Kealakehe; second, Konawaena; third, Keaau.
Division II winners were first, Hawaii Preparatory Academy; second, Makua Lani Christian Academy; third, Parker School.
Student scholarship winners included Kristiana Van Pernis, Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
BIIF Scholarship recipients were Kiersten-Tawny Hurley, Kanu o ka Aina NCPCS; Bram Paikuli, Kamehameha Schools Hawaii; Van Pernis, Hawaii Preparatory Academy.
Kona BPW announces scholarships, grants
The Kona Business and Professional Women organization has awarded four scholarships to the following students: Ashleigh DeMattos, Kealakehe High School graduate attending Grand Canyon University in Arizona specializing in nursing; Rayne Leimana Izumi-Baltero, Konawaena High School graduate attending University of Hawaii at Hilo, majoring in business management; Chase Takaki, Konawaena High School graduate accepted at Whitworth College in Washington state, majoring in health and physical therapy; and Rebecca Crabtree, graduate of Konawaena High School, registered to attend University of Hawaii in Hilo, majoring in accounting to become a certified public accountant.
This year’s Grant For Success award recipients are two women in the community using this grant to better their standings in the employment world. Those chosen are Virginia Holte, owner and manager of West Hawaii Dance Theatre and Academy and West Hawaii Island Gyrotonic, Kathleen Hewlen, cosmetologist employed at 101 Salon. Both will attend certification classes in their fields.
The Kona Business and Professional Women’s organization in conjunction with Business Professional Women’s USA Foundation work to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information. Funds for the scholarship awards are raised during the year through their annual poinsettia and jam sales.
Beaton is essay contest winner
Auto Body Hawaii has announced the winner of this year’s senior essay contest. Essays answered the question, “If you had the opportunity to recommend a new subject that is not currently being offered in your school’s curriculum, what would you recommend and why would it be beneficial for students to learn?”
This year’s winner is Keoni Beaton of Parker School, who wrote that students should be taught the basics of finance while in high school. Beaton won a $500 cash prize.

Harrell graduates with degree in creative media
Miranda Harrell of Kailua-Kona recently earned a bachelor’s degree in creative media from Champlain College in Burlington, Vt.
The Champlain College 136th commencement took place May 3 with 476 undergraduates earning their degrees.
Lupien earns degree in microbiology
Michelle C. Lupien of Kailua-Kona received a bachelor of science degree in microbiology June 14 from Oregon State University.

Orvis graduates from Simpson University
Ryan Orvis of Kailua-Kona graduated from Simpson University in Redding, Calif., with a bachelor’s degree in general ministries. The graduation ceremony took place April 26, with 127 undergraduates receiving their diplomas.

Classes offered in Honokaa
North Hawaii Education and Research Center, a branch of the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Plumeria Street in Honokaa, is offering several credit and noncredit classes this summer.
Classes include sustainable agriculture, cross cultural study of women, volcanoes and earthquakes, American politics, survey of psychology, intro to Hawaiian language, intermediate lightroom techniques, medical terminology, and paths to academic and lifelong success. There will also be life after high school sessions, happening July 1 through 24 in four modules including how and why to get a job or internship, how to interview and write resumes, how to go to college and afford it, and how to live regarding dealing with your own money and taxes, and going to the doctor without your parents.
