The state Board of Education is raising Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi’s annual salary by one-third to $200,000 starting July 1.
Matayoshi had been earning $150,000 a year. That’s the level the state Legislature capped the superintendent’s salary at in 2000.
Lawmakers this year passed a bill boosting the cap to $250,000. Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed the bill Monday.
Board Chairman Don Horner said in a statement Tuesday the superintendent’s salary had been flat for 14 years. He says it was below salaries paid to comparable education executives elsewhere.
Horner says the raise also reflects three years of solid performance in student achievement and significant improvements in fiscal management and accountability.
Matayoshi has served as superintendent since 2010.
Deputy Superintendent Ronn Nozoe’s salary will increase to $160,000 from $140,000. Assistant superintendents and complex area superintendents will see 4 percent increases.
