Aloha Quilters meets Saturday
Aloha Quilters of Kona meets at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.
The quilters work in traditional and Hawaiian styles and meet informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. Energy forum scheduled Tuesday
The public is invited to join Rep. Nicole Lowen and guest presenters at 6 p.m. Tuesday to learn more about energy issues in West Hawaii. Guest presenters include representatives from Hawaii Electric Light Co., Blue Planet Foundation and Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism’s Office of Energy.
An array of topics will be discussed including energy costs, grid modernization, circuit saturation and how to best fulfill the state’s energy needs moving forward. Following brief guest speaker presentations, there will be an opportunity for moderated questions for panelists and time for discussion.
History and biology of humpback whales explored
Susan Rickards will give a talk on humpback whales from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdsay at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
She will describe the basic biology of these animals and historical accounts and evidence of their presence in Hawaii from ancient times through the modern commercial era of whaling and beyond. Biological, archaeological and historical sources will be discussed. Rickards is a founder, primary researcher and board member of the Hawaii Marine Mammal Consortium.
The event is part of Kona Historical Society’s Hanohano O Kona lecture series and is free of charge.

Japanese storytelling planned in Honokaa
Bento Rakugo will perform in the traditional Rakugo Japanese storytelling style at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Honokaa Public Library. Admission is free.
In Rakugo, the performer presents a comic story while sitting on a Japanese cushion throughout the entire performance, speaking all of the voices in both the first person and third person. All stories will be spoken in English.

Free movie day planned Wednesday
Elderly Recreation Services will be holding a free movie day at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the County Council chambers at the West Hawaii Civic Center. This month’s showing will be “King’s Speech.”

Nursing school holds open house
The Hawaii Community College Nursing and Allied Health Program will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Nursing Laboratory Resource Center just below Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua.
New and incoming nursing students, their families and the public are invited to attend. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.

Salvation Army bell ringers to fund raise Wednesday
The Salvation Army’s red kettles and bell ringers will make out-of-season appearances Wednesday in observance of LEON Day in Hawaii.
LEON is NOEL spelled backwards. The day is a reminder that funds are needed throughout the year to help area families, said Maj. John Chamness, divisional leader of The Salvation Army of Hawaii.
“Most folks don’t realize that one out of every 10 residents in Hawaii is touched by The Salvation Army’s compassionate community work each year,” he said. “We encourage everyone in Hawaii to help us fill our red kettles and support their local community on LEON Day.”
Red kettles will be stationed across Hawaii at all Longs CVS Caremark stores and all Walmart stores at various times Wednesday.

Hawaii County Board of Ethics meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the ARDC Training Room at the Aging and Disability Resource Center, 1055 Kinoole St., Suite 101 in Hilo.
