Police reclassify 2011 Hilo death as murder

Hawaii Police have reclassified a death that occurred three years ago from a coroner’s inquest case to a murder.

On Sept. 20, 2011, police were called to a Wainaku residence for a report of a woman found lifeless in the laundry room area of the home.

Upon arrival, police discovered the body of Sommer Ferreira, 20. An initial inquiry was conducted into the cause of her death. Based on the circumstances at the time of the incident, no foul play was suspected.

After receiving recent information about the death, detectives reopened the case investigated further. A suspect has been identified, and the case has been routed to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for further review and disposition.
