Libraries observing Independence Day
In observance of the Independence Day holiday, all public libraries will be closed from July 4 through 6.
Prior to the holiday observance, the Kailua-Kona Public Library and Thelma Parker Memorial Public &School Library will be open on Monday. The Kealakekua Public Library will be open on Thursday.

Four authors featured Tuesday
The monthly Words and Wine event hosted by Kona Stories Book Shop begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The event is free to the public and offers a chance to meet some of Kona’s favorite authors while enjoying pupu and wine. July’s event features authors Kate Pearce, Eila Algood and Tyler and Chris Mercier.
Pearce will present her erotica series “The Sinner’s Club” — a private gentlemen’s club whose members have mysterious pasts and secret fantasies too hot to reveal.
Algood will discuss her “On the Road to Bliss,” which is filled with ideas and inspiration for the reader to seek bliss in his life. It provides reflective and interesting poems, some of which were inspired by the beautiful photographs found within its pages.
The Merciers will present “Your Ideal Hawaii Island Vacation,” a guide for visiting the Big Island.

Rotary Clubs announce new leadership
Rotary Clubs of West Hawaii announce the new leadership team for the upcoming 2014-15 term. Each president has been elected by members of their own club to serve a one-year commitment.
Joyce Riggen is the new officer for Rotary Club of North Hawaii. Riggen is an architect with de Reus Architects in Waimea. The Rotary Club of North Hawaii meets Wednesdays at noon at Anna Ranch in Waimea.
Liz Heiman is a new officer in Rotary Club of Kona. She is the owner of re: Sales &Marketing, Inc. and was a finalist for the 2014 Pacific Business News Businesswoman of the Year. Rotary Club of Kona meets at noon Thursdays at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Larry Kniffin is a new officer of Rotary Club of Kona Mauka. He is a retired naval warrant officer and IT director. Rotary Club of Kona Mauka meets at noon Tuesdays upstairs at Teshima’s restaurant.
Michael Fraser is a new officer in Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise. Fraser is the production manager of chocolate covered products at Mountain Thunder Coffee. Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise meets at 6:45 a.m. Wednesdays at Humpy’s restaurant.
Donna Hiranaka is the assistant governor Hawaii West, serving Rotary Clubs of Kona, Kona Sunrise, Kona Mauka, North Hawaii. She is marketing director for David K. Hiranaka, M.D., D.M.D. Inc.
Active shooter presentation set
The Hawaii Police Department will make an “active shooter” presentation at an evening meeting in Waimea next week.
The meeting will take place 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Waimea Community Center, 65-1260 Kawaihae Road.
The presentation is designed to help individuals increase their survivability should they encounter an active shooter or other type of active violent incident.
Police will provide information on previous incidents of mass violence, recent events, best practices for those caught in such situations, law enforcement’s response, and how to work together as a community toward prevention. They will also provide additional resources for participants so they can continue their education on this topic, followed by a question-and-answer segment.

A Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s meeting meets from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place.
Retired federal employees plan picnic
The fifth annual picnic of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1802 will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 8 in the third pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park. Hamburgers, hot dogs and side dishes will be served for $6 per person. Bring a friend and a favorite dish to share.
