Gallery features 30 island artists today
Kona Oceanfront Gallery, formerly Wyland Gallery, is hosting its largest fine art event of the year — 30 Big Island artists will be at the gallery from 6 to 9:30 p.m. today. The artists will showcase their latest works, sign autographs and pose for photographs.
All art will be specially priced for sale through Sunday. The gallery will also offer wine tasting along with other refreshments and pupu.
This year marks the gallery’s fifth annual Best of the West art contest where the public will vote for its favorites. There will more than 100 pieces of new art on display and all those who attend will be given a secret ballot form where they will be asked to vote for their top five favorites. All those who vote will be entered into a drawing where they can win artwork valued at more than $2,500.
Featured artists include Scott Hanson, Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker, Robert Thomas, and Penny and Alex Gupton, mother and son, lead off the cast the Big Island all-stars already part of the Kona Oceanfront Gallery repertoire along with Rod Crisp, Christian LaCuesta, Dave Reisland, Tom Pendergrass, Mark Tomczak, Dave Golston, Ben Raquinio, Shelly Batha, Diane Tunnell, Barry Lozier, Nancy Kell and Tim and Genevieve Golen. Newcomers to the event this year are Mary Clagett, Jerremy Hicks, Kira Kamamalu, Nancy Kell, Judith Kunzel, Barry Lozier, Jill Maki, Doug Perrine, Maya Soaringson, Anna Sullivan, Esther Szegedy, Kris T., Lynn Vanleeuwan, Ernest Young and William Wingert.

Zulu Dance teaching keiki workshops
Hip-hop program Zulu Dance from Los Angeles will teach free hip-hop dance workshops to Big Island keikie at the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and Freedom Schools. Zulu Dance is a program taught by Crystal Castillo and Spidey Guster who are devoted in enriching the lives of children through dance. Hip-hop choreography, break dance and the history of hip-hop are taught to children and teens.
Events will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tusday at Kekuaokalani by at the Old Kona Airport Park and 3 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kealakehe High School.
Monthly hui meeting canceled
West Hawaii Hui Laulima will not meet in July during its regular meeting time because of the July 4 holiday. The next meeting will be Aug. 1.

Fourth of July party held at the Waimea Town Market
The sixth annual Fourth of July Party at the Waimea Town Market will be held at 9 a.m. July 5 on the Parker School campus. Everyone is invited to this free community event.
Games and giveaways will be held throughout the day. U.S. flags while they last are the market’s gift to keiki. Games include an egg carry race at 9:30 a.m., a sack race at 10:30 a.m. and face painting from 9 a.m. to noon. At 11:15 a.m., a watermelon eating contest will be held. Prize ribbons will be awarded to contest winners.
