Don’t give up fight to save reef fish
I hope D. Davis who wrote the commentary in June 20’s edition also read the front page article, “Reef Woes Eyed.”
I, too, wrote to the editor more than 18 years ago claiming the fish collectors were wrong and it should be stopped. If I remember correctly, I stated something about if fish were elephants this wouldn’t even be a discussion.
D. Davis, it is very nice of you to offer your proposed compromise, but I would say to you don’t give up. Some changes take a long time, but we are correct … fish collecting is wrong and it needs to stop completely. Fish collectors should be able to see the writing on the wall and find a new career.
Perhaps some of you could start breeding aquarium fish in captivity.
To those who have aquariums, I say let your fish lead happy lives, but please do not buy anymore fish that have come from the wild.
Do not give up the fight. We now have the Humane Society International on our side.

Aquarium fish trade deplorable
I was very pleased to read the letter that Robert Wintner had written about the aquarium fish trade business. I think it’s the most deplorable way of making a living.
As I have stated many times before, anyone who has to take from nature for his or her own profit and put nothing back in return is just a plunderer and thief. No one should be taking any living thing from our ocean. There are many other respectable ways of earning a living.
I can still remember the West Hawaii Today article a while back that showed all those yellow tangs dead and discarded on the pier at Honokohau Harbor. I hope these people end up facing the same fate as the animals they killed, but at the bottom of the ocean.
