American Legion dinner planned
American Legion Post 20 and its auxiliary meets at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Makala Boulevard in Kailua-Kona. A dinner will be provided by the VFW Auxiliary at 5 p.m. Dinner is $10.

Special event at Kealakekua library
Susie Roth, “The Fairy Grandmother,” will perform at a special summer reading program at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Kealakekua Public Library. The summer reading program, “Stories Fizzing with Fun, Magic, and Science,” will introduce preschool to second-grade keiki to stories that combine science themes mixed with fun and magic. The performance includes music to dance to, puppets and audience participation.

Proposed mobile meatpacking truck discussed
Two information sessions will discuss a proposed slaughter truck that would bring meatpacking solutions for Hawaii Island’s small producers and ranches.
The first meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Waimea Civic Center conference room at 67-5175 Kamamalu St. A second meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Naalehu Community Center, 95-5635 Mamalahoa Highway in Naalehu.

Cultural programs planned at Volcanoes National Park
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will hold several Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs in July. All programs are free, but park entrance fees may apply.
Ulana Lauhala will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday as part of the park’s Ike Hana Noeau “Experience of the Skillful Work” workshops on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
The 34th annual Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Cultural Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 12 in Kahuku. The event will include hula kahiko, art demonstrations and traditional Hawaiian food tasting. Bring water, a rain jacket, mat or chair, sunscreen and a hat. Pets are not permitted. Lunch and beverages will be available for purchase. The Kahuku unit is the southernmost section of the national park, located on the mauka side of Highway 11 at mile marker 70.5. A hula performance will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. July 15 at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. Three halau will share the stage: Halau Hula Kamamolikolehau, Halau Hula Kalehaupuakea and Halau Hula Kamaluokukui. Music will be performed by Kualoa, featuring Kula Abiva and Pokii Vaughan.
“The Untold Story: Internment of Japanese Americans in Hawaii” will be shown from 7 to 8 p.m. July 29 in the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium. This full-length documentary sheds light into the lives of the internees and unique experience they endured during World War II.

Brain injury group celebrates 10 years
The Kona Brain Injury Support Group celebrates 20 years as a community resource from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehabilitation Services, 75-165 Hualalai Road.
Guest speaker will be Anastassia Hale of the Centre for Neuro Skills, a California-based post-acute brain injury rehabilitation provider. She will discuss an “Introduction to Traumatic Brain Injury and Rehabilitation.” Attendees are welcome to ask questions and learn about treatment, family resources, and specialized programs that help patients return to the rhythms of life after injury.

Residents attend state convention
David Carlson, department (state) commander, presided over the American Legion state convention in Honolulu recently and concluded his successful year. Delegates from Kona were Don Zero, Post 20 and Antonio Gaspar, district vice commander, who was selected as “Legionnaire of the Year” and re-elected to his position. Post 20 also received two awards for membership renewals and recruiting.
The post’s next meeting will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the VFW Post on Makala Boulevard.
