Hawaii’s beloved comedienne, Frank De Lima, known for his parodies, outrageous sense of humor and spontaneous creativity, will celebrate the unique and funny pleasures of life in rural Hawaii — including its ethnic diversity and the importance of family and friends — with two back-to-back shows July 12 to benefit community youth programs.
Sponsored by Friends of Malama Solomon, the first gathering will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Waimea’s Kahilu Town Hall and will benefit Kahilu Theatre’s youth programs. The second show from 2 to 4 p.m. at Honokaa High School cafeteria will benefit Hamakua Youth Center.
Both events will begin with grilled burgers and beverages. A $10 donation is suggested for each event. Tickets will be available at the door or may be requested ahead of time by calling Hulali Covington at 640-8191 or Patti Cook at 937-2833.
“We are hosting these events to benefit Kahilu Theatre and Hamakua Youth Center because these organizations share my vision that Hawaii’s future is now — that our children need and deserve all the support we can give them to prepare them for life in the 21st century,” said Sen. Malama Solomon.
“We wanted to do something fun for everyone that also helps contribute to a promising future for our youth. We invite the community to join us,” she said.
As part of Kahilu Theatre’s commitment to providing theater and performing arts experiences for the youth of North Hawaii, the foundation is planning to expand youth programs in the coming year to include after-school classes that range from hip-hop and breakdancing to aerial trapeze and ballet, plus continuing its after-school K(Arts) for Waimea Middle School students, and starting a new Youth Theatre Troupe. Also, Kahilu is planning four in-house productions in the next year beginning with its Youth Troupe Review in January and including a youth dance show in April. It will host 12 school shows in the coming season featuring professional performers presenting for school audiences at the theater.
Sponsored by Hamakua Youth Foundation Inc., Hamakua Youth Center is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to creating nurturing, stimulating and enjoyable youth-centered, after-school, occasional weekend and summer programs for the Hamakua District. Guided by Hawaiian traditions and values, the center engages youth in leadership training, environmental stewardship, music, visual arts, recreational activities and exploration of the many cultures represented in the area. Youth ages 5 to 18 enjoy a free drop-in afterschool program that shares life lessons through environmental stewardship, Hawaiian culture and enjoyable activities, plus daily homework help and computer access.
