Soil, water group meets Wednesday
Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Services center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa HIghway, Suite 148, Waimea.

Volcanoes park offering free events
Everyone is invited to participate in Kahuku events and hikes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. All events and hikes are free.
The 34th annual Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Cultural Festival will be held in Kahuku from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring hula kahiko and music, practitioners demonstrating their art and Hawaiian foods and crafts. Two Kahuku hikes will be offered, the new Puu o Lokuana cinder cone hike from 10 to 11 a.m., and Ohia Lehua from 1 to 2 p.m. No pets will be allowed. Lunch and beverages will be available for sale. Palm Trail is a moderately difficult 2.6-mile loop traversing scenic pastures along an ancient cinder cone, with some of the best panoramic views Kahuku has to offer. A guided hike of Palm Trail is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday and July 26.
People and Land of Kahuku is a moderate two-mile, three-hour guided hike that loops through varied landscapes to explore the human history of Kahuku. The hike is offered from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 19 and 27.
The Ohia Lehua hike program is offered again from 1 to 2 p.m. July 20.
Sturdy footwear, water, rain gear, sun protection and a snack are recommended for all hiking programs
VFW meeting Saturday morning
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 will meet for the last time at the former Swing Zone on Makala Boulevard at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Kona Post 12122 has achieved the honor of being named not only an all state post but an All American Post.
This meeting will discuss the move to the post’s new location on Kaiwi Street.
