Residents urged to grow hair for good cause
The public is reminded to “Let It Grow” and help cancer victims who suffer hair loss.
Kamaaiana Diamond Co. is once again hosting a hair cutting event Oct. 18. Anyone with a minimum of 8 inches of ponytail can help cancer patients by getting their hair cut and donating the hair in advance or they may call and sign up for a free cut and style during the Oct. 18 event.
The company is also seeking qualified hairstylists to donate their time and talent for about three to four hours on Oct. 18.

Status of women discussed Friday
Hawaii County Committee on the Status of Women meets at 9 a.m. Friday at the Waimea Center, 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 2C, Waimea.

Stroke warning signs, prevention conference set
“Stroke! Think Fast!” is a live videoconference part of the Kaiser Permanente Senior Summit Seminar series. Participants will learn what a stroke is and how to identify and prevent it. The live conference is from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Kaiser Permanente Hilo Clinic, 1292 Waianuenue Ave.

Hospital auxiliary board meets Monday
The Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary’s monthly board meeting is at 1 p.m. Monday in the hospital conference room. On the agenda is the spaghetti dinner fundraiser. Visitors are welcome to attend.
Everyone is also invited to stop by the bake sale from 7 to 9 a.m. Fridays in the hospital cafeteria.

Meditation group meets Monday
The Kona Interfaith Meditation Society meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Hawaiian Queen Coffee Garden, 75-1048 Henry St. There will be a period of sitting meditation, a 15-minute TED video by Benedictine monk David Steindl-Rast, discussion and refreshments.

Jewelry-making class offered at library
Sid Nakamoto will demonstrate jewelry making Monday during a free North Kohala Public Library adult and teen craft program. Two sessions of the same program will be offered at 2 and 6 p.m. Materials will be provided for participants to create their own jewelry piece.

Pahala Public &School Library, located on the campus of Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary schools at 96-3150 Pikake St., will offer its patrons new public service hours beginning Monday. Hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, and noon to 5 p.m. Fridays.

Ceramics class registration underway
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation in Waimea, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding registration for a mini-modeling ceramics class that will run Wednesdays, Aug. 20 to Sept. 10, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Waimea Community Center’s multipurpose room. The class is free and limited to the first 10 registrants with completed county forms.

Hearing on milk control rules slated
The state Department of Agriculture is holding a public hearing on the proposed amendments to administrative rules relating to milk control at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Agriculture Resource Management Division, Waimea Irrigation System Branch conference room, 66-1220 B Lalamilo Farm Lots Road, in Waimea.
The purpose of the hearing is to receive testimony relating to the proposed amendments to Title 4, Subtitle 4, Chapter 60, Hawaii Administrative Rules, entitled “Milk Control Rules.”
The proposed amendments are to allow the producer or producer-distributors in the Honolulu milk shed and the Hawaii milk shed to request a waiver that would permit the sale of milk for less than the minimum price.
The proposal can be reviewed in person at the department’s offices at 75 Aupuni St. in Hilo and at 82-6130 Mamalahoa Highway in Captain Cook. The offices are open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Copies may also be obtained at the offices by paying a fee charge for photocopying or sent by mail up receipt of a fee charge for photocopying and postage. Copies are available online at the department’s website, hdoa.hawaii.gov/meetings-reports.
Attendees at this hearing may submit comments orally or in writing. Written testimony must be receive prior to the start of the hearing and submitted via postal mail to the Quality Assurance Division, c/o Department of Agriculture, 1428 S. King St., Honolulu, HI 96814. Testimony may also be faxed to 832-0683 or emailed to hdoa.qad@hawaii.gov. Include the word “testimony” and the subject matter. If possible, submitted five written copies of the testimony prior to the hearing.
