Big Island police arrest 12 for DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 12 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of July 7 through Sunday. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash.

So far this year, there have been 649 DUI arrests compared with 657 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested six of the drivers while South Hilo officers arrested three motorists and South Kohala officers arrested two. Offiers in the Puna District arrested one motorists.

There have been 827 major accidents so far this year compared with 741 during the same period last year.

So far this year, there have been eight traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two fatalities to a combination of drugs and alcohol.
