Leonard Pacheco Sr.

Leonard Hubert Pacheco Sr., 89, of Mountain View died June 17, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 28, 1925, in Hana, Maui, he was a retired National Park Service ranger at Yosemite National Park and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a World War II veteran.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 16 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10:30 a.m. service. Burial follows at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Fumiko Izumi-Pacheco of Mountain View; sons, Leonard Pacheco Jr. of the Philippines, Allan (Lori) Pacheco of Ninole, Ricky (Elizabeth) Pacheco of Pepeekeo, Charles Reyes Jr. of Hawi; daughter, Terry Burcena of Hilo; sister, Frances McCulley of Morgan Hill, Calif.; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jose Gancinia

Jose S. Gancinia, 84, of Honokaa died July 2, 2014, at his residence. Born Sept. 18, 1929, in Pangasinan, Philippines, he was a laborer for the Hamakua Sugar Plantation Co. and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Honokaa.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. July 18 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Honokaa for an 11 a.m. service. Burial will be at the Honokaa Community Cemetery (Paalea). Family requests casual attire be worn and flowers are welcome.

He is survived by wife, Geraldine Gancinia of Honokaa; sons, Augusto (Cecilia) Gancinia and Gjim Gancinia, both of Honokaa, Mario (Cynthia) Gancinia of North Shore, Oahu; daughters, Adoracion Gancinia and Odessa Gancinia, both of Honokaa; sisters, Pacita Valejos and Letty Mangabat, both of the Philippines, Florentina Dacquel of Honokaa; brothers, Mamerto Gancinia of Honokaa, Pedro Gancinia of Philippines; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Moses Moke

Moses “Uncle Moke” Kealoha O Nalani Kuamoo Moke, 74, of Hilo died June 4, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born Jan. 10, 1940, in Keaukaha, he was a retired senior truck driver-Class A for Yamada Transfer, Inc., a former treasurer for ILWU Local 142, Unit 1412, treasurer for Hawaii Division ILWU Local 142 Pensioners Council, president for Papaikou ILWU Local 142 Pension Club, treasurer and former president for Hilo ILWU Local 142 Pension Club, treasurer for Keaukaha Community Association, president and genealogist for Ohana Ka-Uaua-A-Mahi Ohana O Hawaii, member of the Kuamoo Foundation, a member sacristan and building maintenance chairman for Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church, former member of the Hawaii Island Archery Club, co-chairman for the former Hawaii Island King Kamehameha Day Parade Committee of Hilo and Royal Court co-director for King Kamehameha Day Celebration at Moku-ola formerly sponsored by Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church.

Spencer Pomroy

Spencer “Poco” Lee Kawaihoola Pomroy, 49, of Mountain View died June 21, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a bus driver for Roberts Hawaii Tours and Hawaii County Hele On and owner of Volcano Sound System with Slides by Deysia Views.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. July 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. A service will also take place at 9 a.m. Aug. 9 at St. George Catholic Church in Waimanalo, Oahu. Family requests casual attire be worn.

Margaret Espiritu

Margaret Jonolino Espiritu, 86, of Kapaau died June 30, 2014, at her son’s residence. Born March 24, 1928, in Kohala, she was a housewife and member of Sacred Heart’s Catholic Church.

Velma Tanaka

Velma Leilehua Tanaka, 57, of Keaau died May 20, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Pahala, she was a homemaker.

Diane Hara

Diane Hisako Hara, 93, of Hilo died June 6, 2014, at her residence. Born in Honalo, she was the retired owner of the former Kilauea Preserve Center and member of Hilo Hooganji Mission.

Bernice McCartin

Bernice Eleanor McCartin, 91, of Keaau died July 5, 2014, in Keaau. Born Sept. 12, 1922, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., she was a homemaker and member of Hawaii Adult Day Care.

She is survived by son, Dennis (Sharon) McCartin of Keaau; daughter, Sue Beauregard of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Loretta Evangelista

Loretta Lorraine Evangelista, 68, of Hilo died June 24, 2014, at Hospice of Hilo’s Pohai Malama Facility. Born Sept. 8, 1945, in Hilo, she was a retired housekeeper.
