HHC summer series kicks off

The Hawaii Cycling Club presents the new “Sea to Mauna Loa” on Aug. 9. The race, more than 40 miles, will start on Waikoloa Beach Road at Queens’ Marketplace. More details are being developed.

The popular 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” occurs at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the Veterans Cemetery heading north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at the 85-mile marker. Registration is at Veterans Cemetery from 7–7:40 a.m.

Sunrise Athletics run/walk on tap

Sunrise Athletics’ second annual 5K and 1.5-mile Fun Run/Walk — Supported by BioAstin will be held July 26 at Liliuokalani Gardens in Hilo. The 5k will start at 7:30 a.m. and the 1.5-mile race at 8:15 a.m.

There will be postrace snacks, giveaways, field-day events and a rummage sale ongoing throughout the event. There will be awards for the top overall runners, age group and other categories. The “Race to the Top” organization winner bringing in the most participants will be announced and given the monetary award.

Applications may be picked up at Spencer’s Health and Fitness, Just Cruising Coffee, Starbucks-Puainako and Big Island Running Company in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Deadline to register with shirt guaranteed is Saturday, but late registration until race day is accepted with no extra cost and no shirt guaranteed.

Special Olympics coaches needed

Special Olympics West Hawaii is looking for soccer coaches. Practices and games are underway at Old Kona Airport Park fields from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 10.

Basketball coaches are also wanted for the Winter Games. The season runs from September through November.

Makalei summer tournament

The third of four events of a summer tournament at Makalei Golf Club is scheduled for Saturday.

The last event is scheduled for Aug. 16.

Prizes are given at each event, and points accumulate toward qualification for the Makalei Cup Challenge.
