Hawaii Community College planning Hilo open house

A free open house event at Hawaii Community College in Hilo will explain how to join a fast track to earn college credits and certificates in sustainable construction, sustainable lot design, virtual office assistant, business essentials, retail essentials, entrepreneurship, or business foundations.

The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in building 379, room 1 and is geared toward those who are unemployed, underemployed, veterans and those who want to update their skills. Staff will help attendees complete a college application.

There will be demonstrations of an online classroom and gadgets used for geographical information systems, geomatics, and land survey practices. Information on noncredit training in process technology, industrial maintenance and a boating safety certification will also be available. Also covered will be internship opportunities and how work experience, military service, and professional training could count toward college credit.

Hospital foundation offers free lecture

The Kona Hospital Foundation will hold its bimonthly informal lecture series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 22 in the Community Hale at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The lectures are free and open to the public.

The topic will be “Understanding Emergency Care in Hawaii.” The foundation is hosting guest speakers Richard McDowell, trauma medical director, and Wendi Wagner, trauma program manager, as they discuss Kona Community Hospital’s Level III Trauma Center, access to emergency care in Hawaii County, as well as injury prevention. A question and answer time will follow.

Kealakehe High hosts student orientation

Kealakehe High School invites all parents of incoming ninth-graders and parents who are new to the school to a parent orientation at 5:30 p.m Wednesday in the school cafeteria. Students are welcome to attend with their parents.

Information relating to graduation requirements, grading policy, student and athletic opportunities, student schedules and changes, lunch, bus and other useful information will be shared. Those attending will also be able to meet the principal, vice principals and other staff members.

Student fees can be paid before or after the orientation in the library from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Checks, cash and credit or debit cards will be accepted. To pay by credit card, the parent/guardian must first establish an account with ezschoolpay.com. The parent or guardian initiates the transaction — not the school.

AARP driver safety class scheduled

Kona Palisades Assn. is sponsoring an AARP Smart Driver class at 1 p.m. July 28 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive. Geared toward the older driver, the class does not include driving or written tests only quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections, drinking and driving, as well as other subjects.

Some participants may receive a discount on their auto insurance after completing the class.

Kona resident attends Washington event

Kailua-Kona resident Mary Ellen C. Smith will be among more than 3,500 members of Daughters of the American Revolution traveling to Washington, D.C., for the DAR’s 123rd annual Continental Congress. Smith will serve as Hawaii’s state regent, and is also the chapter registrar for the organization’s Hawaii Loa chapter on Hawaii Island.

Highlights of the weeklong event will include welcoming respected keynote speakers and award winners during the gala evening ceremonies.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.

Shriners meet Wednesday for lunch

All visiting Shriners are invited to join resident Shriners for lunch Wednesdays at The Fish Hopper restaurant at 11:30 a.m.

Codependent women meeting Thursday

Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s group meets from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place.

The 12-step fellowship is comprised of those whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development and maintenance of healthy relationships. The nonprofit organization is supported by the voluntary contributions of attending members.

Davenport completes Air Force training

Air Force Airman Katarina C. Davenport has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Davenport is the daughter of David and Carole Davenport of Waimea. She is a 2011 graduate of Kona Community School for Adults in Waimea.
