BISAC celebrates 50 years Saturday
The Big Island Substance Abuse Council invites the public to celebrate its 50th anniversary at Summer Jam 2014. The free event will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Waiakea High School, 155 W. Kawili St., Hilo, with the strongman competition starting at 7 a.m.
The Summer Jam will feature a strongman contest as well as food booths. There will be crafts, a silent auction featuring an opportunity to bid on a car, free keiki activities including the Zoo Choo and an entertainment lineup featuring New Zealand pop sensations, J-Geeks.
Money raised from food and craft booths and the silent auction will go to support BISAC’s Pookela Vocational Program, which is in the process of creating a food truck business as part of its training program.

Seed exchange scheduled Saturday
Tropical Edibles Nursery in Captain Cook is hosting a free summer seed exchange in South Kona from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The event starts with a potluck lunch and talk story at noon, followed by the seed exchange. Members of the Seed Exchange Working Group, including Nancy Redfeather, Momi Subiono and Diana Duff, will be on hand during the lunchtime talk story to give advice and answer questions about seed saving.
Anyone interested in seed saving or vegetative propagation is welcome. Bring seeds, cuttings or huli to share. To avoid transferring little fire ants, do not bring soil with plant material.

Mexican Fiesta fundraiser for fire victims set
Kona Elks Lodge 2616 will host a Mexican Fiesta fundraiser from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The fundraiser will help the two families displaced by the fire on Kealapua Street in June.
The event will serve a dinner of chicken enchiladas, Mexican rice, beans, guacamole and flan for dessert. Entertainment will by a mariachi singer and folkloric, salsa and bachata dancers.
Cost for dinner and entertainment is $20. Parking is free. All proceeds from the meal and entertainment will go directly to the families.
Look for the banner across the street from Big Island Honda. Access on Pawai Street from Kaiwi Street toward the brewery and into the Kona Town Storage driveway.
Kona Amateur Radio to meet Sunday
The Kona Amateur Radio Society meets from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the south end of Wawaloli Beach Park at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority. All members, friends and those interested in amateur radio are invited.
A potluck picnic will take place during the meeting. This month’s club food theme will be American food in celebration of Independence Day. Bring a favorite dish to share.

Kona Historical Society holding online auction
Kona Historical Society will be “Saving Hawaii’s History” by auctioning items including art, activities and antiques to raise money for educational programs. All the items will be sold online through 7 p.m. Sunday.
Bidding will be held at biddingforgood.com/konahistorical. More items will be added as they are collected.
Orchid club plans annual show and sale
The 32nd annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club “Celebrate with Orchids” show and sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall. The Daifukuji taiko drummers will perform at 10 a.m.
This year’s celebratory theme is in conjunction with the mission’s 100-year anniversary. The free event offers attendees complimentary refreshments. A limited supply of orchid boutonnieres and corsages will be given out to early attendees.
The event will feature a display of blooming orchids, orchid-themed vases and a sampling of ways to integrate the plants into lanai decor. Attendees can get expert advice on caring for orchids at a quesiton-and-answer booth.
The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club is West Hawaii’s oldest orchidaceae organization with a mission to learn about and foster orchid culture and promote fellowship among orchid collectors. The club meets the second Wednesday of every month at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall just north of Kainaliu.

Nance to serve Elks on national level
Barbara A. Nance of Kailua-Kona will serve as district deputy to the Elks national president for the lodges in the Hawaii district of the California-Hawaii Elks Association. She was installed during the order’s 150th Elks National Convention held July 13 through Thursday in New Orleans, where more than 7,000 members and guests were present. She will serve a one-year term.
