Kona police arrest 9 for drunken driving

Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of July 14 through Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Kona officers arrested nine motorists, North Kohala officers nabbed two motorists, Puna officers arrested two motorists and South Kohala and South Hilo police arrested one person each.

So far this year, there have been 664 DUI arrests compared with 676 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.8 percent.

There have been 856 major accidents so far this year compared with 772 during the same period last year, an increase of 10.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been eight traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
