Lightning golden at Aloha International Cup

The Lightning Soccer Academy U-10 soccer team came away with gold medals at the Aloha International Cup from July 17 to 20 at the Waipio Soccer Complex on Oahu. The team advanced to the championship game, and took home the title with a 3-1 victory. The squad won the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association Championships Island Championship in May.

Seven of the players are from Hilo, four from Waikoloa and one from Kohala. The members of the team are: Johan Zarate, Daniel Avendano, Kanai Eckart, Julian Parks, Kasen Mehau, Jase Ambrosio, Tyrus Arakawa, Michael DeCotio III, Drake Okumura, Colton Kahiamoe, and Michelle Gonzalez.

Yagi basketball camp a hit

Legendary University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach Jimmy Yagi hosted the 2nd annual Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp this week.

Open to boys and girls 9-17 years old, the camp is named in honor of the legendary former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who put Hilo on the map when several of his teams reached the NAIA finals. He also helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School for 37 years.

Campers received personalized instruction from coaches as they practice agility, ball-handling and other drills. Then, the youth players will showcase their skills by competing in full-court games.

Kona Aquatics comes up big at long course event

Kona Aquatics had three winners and finished sixth in the team standings at the Hawaii long course swimming championships last weekend at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Honolulu.

Maile Lawson led the way for Kona Aquatics with four medals in the girls 11-12 division. Cara Jernigan won the girls 17-18 200 breaststroke in her final race as an 18-year-old, finished second in the 200 individual medley and took third in the 100 breaststroke. Duke Becker claimed a pair of silver medals in the boys 10-and-under division, finishing second in the 50 breaststroke and the 100 breaststroke.

Kai Griley and Madeline Foo also medaled.

Waimea Sports Expo

The second annual Waimea Sports Expo will be held at Waimea Park.

This free, family-friendly, drug- and alcohol-free event offers an opportunity for youth and families to participate in instructional clinics and mildly competitive games.

LavaKids Aquathlon

Sunday

Lavakids will hold an aquathlon in conjunction with the Greg Cameron Firemen’s Fund Biathlon at Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area.

Keiki 6 and younger will participate in a free beach dash, while 7- to 10-year-olds will battle in a swim and run and 11- to 14-year-olds will race in a longer swim and run.

The cost is $15 and participants may also race in the Greg Cameron Biathlon for no extra cost.

HPA Tennis Camp

Aug. 12-14, 9 a.m. to noon, ages 6-17

The HPA tennis camp, open to ages 6-17 of all skill levels, will be hosted by HPA tennis coach Jeff Lewis.

Register a minimum of six days prior to camp to assure a spot and consistency in the program.

Big Island sailing camp

Intermediate class Monday to Aug.1

Two dinghy and keelboat sailing camps will be available for participants ages 10-16. Day camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Novice teens and intermediate sailors are encouraged to join the July 14-18 session. Intermediate sailing and intro to race is July 28 to Aug. 1.

The cost is $165 for new sailors, $145 for returning sailors. Scholarships are available.

Biddy Basketball clinics and league

Aug. 4, 6, 11, 14 and 21

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering Biddy Basketball clinics and leagues for ages 5-8 at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona.

Clinics registration is slated July 21-31.

The league is scheduled Sept. 8 to Oct. 20, with play at 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays. Registration is July 21 to Aug. 14.

Registration forms are available 12:30-2:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday at the gym office.

Volunteer coaches and officials are needed.

Basketball clinics upcoming in Hilo

Aug. 3

Former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball player Aukai Wong will hold basketball clinics from 5:45-7:45 p.m. in Hilo.

There are two divisions: one for intermediate boys and girls and another for high school boys and girls. One hour will be devoted to a study session with another on “intense” basketball drills.

T-shirts, drinks and snacks are included.

Frozen Pea Productions will host the Brown Bear Bash and Sunny Sprint Aug. 17.

The bash course will be a 1⁄3-mile swim and 3.1-mile run/walk and the sprint will cover 200 yards in the water and a 1-mile run/walk.

Kids Bowl Free at KBXtreme

KBXtreme in Kailua-Kona is partnering with Kids Bowl Free, a national summer bowling program for children younger than 15, to allow two free games on weekdays.

This year, KBXtreme is nominating Big Island elementary and intermediate schools for the Bowling for Schools $50,000 grant program. The program runs to Aug. 31.

Kona Aerials Gymnastics Summer Fun Camp

The Kona Aerials Gymnastics Summer Fun Camp is open for children ages 5-10.

The camp takes 14 enrollments per day. Registration is necessary to guarantee a spot in the program. Applications may be mailed or hand-delivered to Kona Aerials Gymnastics Club.
