LOS ANGELES — Washington quarterback Cyler Miles was suspended for the Huskies’ season opener against Hawaii for his role in two on-campus assaults following the Seattle Seahawks’ win over the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl.

Coach Chris Petersen said at Pac-12 media days Thursday that Miles will miss the Aug. 30 game.

Wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow, who has since left the team, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and one count of mischief. Miles was not charged.

Miles, a sophomore, will be one of three quarterbacks competing to replace Keith Price. Redshirt sophomore Jeff Lindquist and redshirt freshman Troy Williams split snaps during spring practice while Miles was suspended from all team activities.

“We thought it was appropriate that he would miss the first game as well,” Petersen said while speaking at Paramount Studios. “I’ll tell you, he missed all of spring ball, he missed every meeting, everything. He has already been through a lot, just that alone to be put behind the eight ball.”

Miles is the only quarterback on the Washington roster who has started a game. He was 15 of 24 for 162 yards and one touchdown in a 69-27 win at Oregon State last season while Price was injured. Petersen, set to begin his first season at Washington after going 92-12 in eight seasons at Boise State, said Miles has learned from what happened.

“He has done everything right, without question, or he wouldn’t be with us,” Petersen said. “Guys make mistakes. We all know that, especially in that age group.”

Stringfellow would have been allowed to return to the Huskies, Petersen said, but announced in May he would transfer. Stringfellow chose Ole Miss after initially committing to Nebraska.

Two Texas players charged with sex assault

AUSTIN, Texas — A University of Texas police spokeswoman says two Longhorns football players have been charged with felony sexual assault and their arrests are pending.

Spokeswoman Cindy Posey says the players charged Thursday are wide receivers Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander. Sanders also faces a charge of improper photography.

Further details were not immediately available. It was not clear if either player has an attorney.

Sanders, a junior, has played in 23 career games and started seven last year. He has 39 career receptions for 376 yards and one touchdown. Sanders was suspended for the 2013 season opener after a drunken driving arrest.

Meander is a redshirt freshman who did not play last season.

Mack Brown to serve as ABC studio analyst

BRISTOL, Conn. — Former Texas coach Mack Brown will serve as a studio analyst for college football games on ABC.

Brown stepped down in December after 16 years with the Longhorns, winning the national title after the 2005 season.

Brown will appear on “College Football Countdown” and offer pregame, halftime and postgame commentary for the games on ABC, including “Saturday Night Football.” He will work with host John Saunders and former Florida State quarterback Danny Kanell.

ESPN also said Thursday that former Miami and North Carolina coach Butch Davis will serve as an analyst for ESPN2’s studio coverage on Saturdays.

Davis was fired by the Tar Heels in 2011 during an NCAA investigation. He led the Hurricanes back to national prominence while coaching them from 1995-2000. In between, there was a mostly unsuccessful NFL stint with the Cleveland Browns.
