Police arrest 19 motorist for DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant from July 21 through Sunday. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.

Kona police officers arrested five motorists, South Hilo officers nabbed eight motorists, Puna officers arrested four motorists and South Kohala and North Kohala officers each arrested one motorist.

So far this year, there have been 683 DUI arrests compared with 701 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.6 percent.

There have been 891 major accidents so far this year compared with 790 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been eight traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 57.9 percent.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and two fatalities were related to combination of drugs and alcohol.
