Kohala offers volleyball, basketball

The Kohala Community Athletic Association is sponsoring a volleyball league for fourth- to eighth-graders and Biddy basketball for 5-8-year-olds.

Free registration for both sports will be 4-5 p.m. Aug. 7 and 11 at Hisaoka Gym. Registration for volleyball includes uniforms.

Practices are scheduled for the second half of August, and games September through mid-October.

Waimea offers bubble ball soccer league

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is registering participants for an indoor bubble ball soccer league from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 at Thelma Parker Gym.

Games will played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rosters are limited to six players, age 12 and older. There are eight teams in the league.

Waimea offers instructional tennis

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding sign-ups for instructional tennis at Waimea Park.

The free clinics are instructed by tennis pro Jeff Lewis, director of Rutger Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Clinics will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 18. The program is limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 and 10 and older.

Waimea offers Biddy basketball

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will hold Biddy basketball clinics and league.

The clinics will be Aug. 11-13 at Thelma Parker Gym. Registration starts at 3 p.m. Clinics begin at 3:30 for ages 5-6 and at 4:30 for ages 7-8.

The league will be Sept. 15 to Oct. 22. The games will be played at various gyms, starting at 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Fees are $10, payable to Waimea Athletics.

HCC summer series kicks off

The Hawaii Cycling Club presents “Sea to Mauna Loa” on Aug. 9. The more than 40-mile-long race will start on Waikoloa Beach Road at Queens’ MarketPlace. More details are being developed.

The popular 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” occurs at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery heading north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at mile marker 85. Registration is at the cemetery from 7-7:40 a.m.

Special Olympics coaches needed

Special Olympics West Hawaii is looking for soccer coaches. Practices and games are underway at Old Kona Airport Park fields from 3-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The season runs through Aug. 10.

Basketball coaches are also wanted for the Winter Games. The season runs from September through November.

HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit

Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross-country course.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, died in June 2009 after a battle against breast cancer.

All net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102.

The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Medals will be awarded to the top two overall male and female finishers and the top three male and female finishers in each age division. Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9. All preregistered participants are guaranteed a shirt and goodie bag.

HI-PAL hoops tournament sign-ups

HI-PAL is seeking teams interested in playing in “Click It or Ticket” 5-on-5 basketball tournaments Aug. 30-31 at Papaikou Gym and Sept. 12-14 at Waiakea Uka Gym.

Teams in the 5-6 division and 7-8 division are wanted for the August tournament, and in the 9-10 division and 11-12 division for the September tournament. Deadline to enter and submit all completed forms to participate in the tournament is Sept. 1.

The age cut-off for the tournaments is Dec. 31, 2014. Players are allowed to play on one team per division.

All HI-PAL roster, waiver and seat belt forms are required for participation.
