Hawaiian filmmaker receives Walter Cronkite Award
Ocean advocates Sylvia Earle and Sam Low were awarded the 2014 Walter Cronkite award.
The awards are presented to those using the power of the media to create positive social change in the world. Earle’s life is featured in the documentary “Mission Blue” that is being launched Aug. 15 by Netflix. Earle is a pioneering oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer.
Low is an award winning Hawaiian filmmaker. “The Navigators – Pathfinders of the Pacific,” tells the story of the Polynesian settlement of the pacific and his recent book, “Hawaiki Rising – Hokulea, Nainoa Thompson and the Hawaiian Renaissance” was published in conjunction with the launch of Hokulea’s four-year Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage. Low sailed aboard Hokulea on three voyages.
Scholarships to be awarded at benefit luau
The Kona Chapter of the Royal Order of Kamehameha will award two $1,000 scholarships during its third annual public benefit luau from 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at Makaeo Events Pavilion.
The recipients are Konawaena High School graduate Pookela Hanato-Smith and Kealakehe High School graduate Tayana Cardoza. Hanato-Smith has been accepted at Southern Utah University and will be taking up the field of kinesiology. Cardoza has been accepted at Weatherford College in Texas and will be tackling the veterinarian field.

Women veterans to be celebrated at PTA
The Veteran Centers of Hilo and Kona, along with the help of various agencies, are hosting the fourth annual Women Veteran Day Celebration event to celebrate and honor women veterans who served in military and service members who are still serving. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Pohakuloa Training Area.
Access to the PTA requires a reservation, which can be made with the Veterans Centers of Hawaii.
Assistive technology conference is Aug. 11
The public is invited to a live videoconference on technology for seniors at Kaiser Permanente Hilo Clinic, 1292 Waianuenue Ave. The video conference is from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 11.
Assistive Technology Resource Centers of Hawaii will share tools for enhancing daily living activities, such as reading the newspaper, keeping track of prescriptions, or simply enjoying a conversation with a friend.
