Free Medicare counseling offered

The State Health Insurance Assistance Program offers free, unbiased Medicare, Medigap, and Medicare Advantage information and counseling from 9 a.m. to noon on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at West Hawaii Civic Center in building D.

Free business development workshop offered

A free business development workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 in the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union conference room at 73-5611 Olowalu St. in Kailua-Kona.

The class will help small businesses interested in government contracting and will feature speakers who will discuss how to win federal contracts, how to write capability statements and business plans, financing, bonding, and details about Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and Small Business Administration certifications.

Theater kicks off season with Family Fun Day

Kahilu Theatre will open its doors for a Family Fun Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The theatre will launch its 2014-2015 season that day and tickets will be released for public sale at the event and at kahilutheatre.org. Call the Kahilu Theatre box office at 885-6868 for information.

The event will include dance, musical theatre, circus acts, live music, and food trucks. The Great Barusky will be walking through the lobby and galleries performing close-up magic, and will also perform a full magic show at noon. Rhythm-based acoustic rock band Life in Pursuit will play from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. from the lobby stage. The Keiki Performing Arts Workshop will perform on the main stage at 1:30 p.m.

Annetta Lucero perform baton twirling shows at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Lucero is a three-time world champion in baton twirling, and is also a two-time Guinness World Record holder, a Cirque du Soleil special events artist, and a renowned choreographer.

Dance teachers from Kahilu’s after-school classes will also offer free workshops on stage. Dance classes start the second week of September. Online registrations will be open from Aug. 10.

Home tour to raise funds for Yurt Project

The public is invited to tour three luxury Kona residences and eat a progressive four-course Hawaiian brunch during “The Yurt Project Home &Garden Tour.”

The tour is offered through Home Tours Hawaii and will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 12, Sept. 17 and Oct. 15. The cost is $149 per person with 50 percent donated to Habitat For Humanity West Hawaii to bring affordable yurt living to partner families. Date set for Relay for Life of Waimea

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Waimea will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m Oct. 25 at Waimea Park. The new daytime hours will encourage more families with children to participate.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in more than 5,200 communities and 20 countries. This year’s Relay For Life of Waimea goal is to raise $40,000. Worldwide, the movement raises more than $400 million annually.

This year’s theme is a Paniolo Country Fair as a tribute to Waimea’s ranching history.
