An off-duty fire official rescued a boy found unresponsive in a Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay pool on Tuesday.

East Hawaii Battalion Chief Michael Hayashida, who was vacationing at the resort, found the 8-year-old boy at the bottom of the pool, Hawaii Fire Department officials said Wednesday. Hayashida began performing rescue breathing. He was assisted by Fire Inspector Palani Kurashige, who happened to be nearby.

The boy began to breathe on his own and was taken to Kona Community Hospital in serious but stable condition.
