Barney Sheffield of the American Red Cross Hawaii Chapter said Friday morning the agency’s stolen pickup truck was found in Papaikou.

“They (the police) said they’re not sure what kind of condition it was in. They asked me to come get it but I’m too busy right now,” he told Stephens Media Hawaii.

Sheffield said the agency’s emergency supplies were in a separate trailer that was not hitched to the Ford pickup.

The truck was stolen from the relief organization’s Hilo office the night before Hurricane Iselle hit the Big Island. Volunteers discovered the vehicle was missing Thursday morning as they arrived to prepare for Iselle’s landfall.

The truck was the Red Cross’ only vehicle on the island and was used to tow its supply trailer. It was kept in a fenced area on Ululani Street, and the thief or thieves used the truck to ram a locked gate.
