Toothbrush drive held
West Hawaii Community Heath Center is promoting good dental health by conducting a toothbrush drive for those in need during National Health Center week today through Saturday.
Each branch of the Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union and each West Hawaii Community Health Center location will serve as a drop-off point.
Kiholo fishpond cleanup is Saturday
The Nature Conservancy will hold a volunteer work day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kiholo Fishpond.
The group will help revitalize the fishponds by removing invasive vegetation from the pond edge and clearing debris. The efforts will make space for native plants and improve water quality.
A talk story will be held at the end of the work day after a potluck lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. with Kuulei Keakealani, the cultural director of Hui Aloha Kiholo. She will share the ancestral knowledge of Kiholo that has been passed down through the generations within her ohana.
The gate will be open from 8:30 a.m. Drinks, water and rice will be provided. Bring a hat, sunscreen, bathing suit, hiking boots, tabis, gloves, protective clothing, a water bottle and hand tools. RSVP by Thursday to rmost@tnc.org.
American Legion meets Wednesday
Kona American Legion Post 20 will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday at the new VFW facility at 74-5543 Kaiwi St. Suite 18A, behind Kona Locksmith. Camaraderie begins at 3:30 p.m. with a call to order at 4. A meal will be provided for $10.

Statehood is topic of presentation
The public is invited to learn about how Hawaii became a state from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Lyman Museum, 276 Haili St., Hilo.
Historian Boyd D. Bond will unravel the events that led Hawaii from kingdom to territory to statehood. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the event will begin at 7. Seating is limited, so come early. Admission is free to museum members and $3 for nonmembers.
