The state Department of Education will resume regular public school schedules and student activities on Monday, with the exception of Waiakea High School.
Dozens of DOE schools served as emergency shelters from Thursday through Saturday. An estimated 400 individuals sought shelter at Waiakea High during those days. Waiakea High staff will report to work on Monday to get the school back in order for students’ return on Tuesday, according to DOE.
“Our employees, especially our complex area superintendents and principals worked around the clock in caring for students and school communities during the stormy weather,” said Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi. “We appreciate their dedication in going above and beyond to help with the emergency needs of our communities.”
Hawaii Island facilities reported minimal damage because of strong winds; however, most of DOE facilities were not affected by the storm.

According to the Hawaii State Public Charter Commission, the Hawaii Academy of Arts and Science in Volcano will be closed for students on Monday.
The main campus will be open for office, maintenance, and technology personnel. Teachers and classroom personnel may come in voluntarily. The school will asess the situation at its other sites located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahoa Village, New Hope Church, and Kalapana Seaview. Ke Kula O Nawahiokalaniopuu in Keaau will be closed on Monday, Aug. 11.
Kua o ka La New Century Public Charter School in Pahoa will be closed on Monday, Aug. 11.
