Foundation accepting grant applications
Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation is accepting applications for its 2014 grant program from organizations and projects that help to improve the legal status and welfare of women and children in Hawaii.
The deadline for receipt of grant applications for October consideration is Sept. 5. HWLF typically awards grants in amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000.
HWLF prefers to make awards on a project-by-project basis or as a means to jump-start an organization’s funding sources. HWLF’s primary criteria in considering funding applications include improving women and children’s access to the legal system; reducing child abuse; reducing domestic violence; reducing sexual abuse; increasing financial independence; and improving women and children’s health, education and welfare.

N. Kohala library announces programs
North Kohala Public Library fall programming for children and teens begins this month. A Kendama Club will start at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 19. The club is open to all ages and will meet at 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday.
The first youth book and movie club meeting open to grades 4 and up will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27. The group will discuss “Hoot” by Karl Hiassen and then watch the movie. The club will meet on the last Wednesday of every month.
A teen poetry group open to grades 9 through 12 will hold its first meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 3. The club will explore different types of poetry, as well as read and write their own poetry.
The Home School Wednesday program for 6 through 9-year-old children will resume in September with sessions from 10 to 11 a.m. Sept. 3, 17, Oct. 8, 22 and Nov. 5, 19. The classes will continue twice monthly though the remainder of the public school year.

Mauna Kea soil, water group to meet
Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Service’s center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite, 148, Waimea.
