Konawaena football media day

The Konawaena Wildcats football media day will be at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Julian Yates Field on campus. Family, friends, fans and all media will be granted exclusive access to the squad. Autographs, photo sessions and special arrangements for interviews with coaches and players will be available. There is no admission for this event.

Waimea offers bubble ball soccer league

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is registering participants for an indoor bubble ball soccer league from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 at Thelma Parker Gym.

Games will played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rosters are limited to six players, age 12 and older. There are eight teams in the league.

Waimea offers instructional tennis

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding sign-ups for instructional tennis at Waimea Park.

The free clinics are instructed by tennis pro Jeff Lewis, director of Rutgers Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Clinics will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 14 to Sept. 18. The program is limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 and 10 and older.

Waimea offers Biddy Basketball

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will hold a Biddy Basketball league.

The league will be Sept. 15 to Oct. 22. The games will be played at various gyms, starting at 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Fees are $10, payable to Waimea Athletics.

HCC Time Trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s popular 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” takes place at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the Veterans Cemetery heading north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at the 85 mile marker. Registration is at Veterans Cemetery from 7–7:40 a.m.

BIRC offers marathon training

Big Island Running Company is again offering a free training program for the Honolulu Marathon.

The program will start with a meeting at 5 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Alii Drive location in the Coconut Grove Marketplace, with a short run following. Runs will be scheduled to coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and a long run at 6:30 a.m. Saturdays. Each participant will have additional running days on their own.

The Honolulu Marathon is on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 5 a.m.

UH-Hilo Hall of Fame induction ceremony

The 2014 Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.

Reservations are $50 per person and can be made by calling HOF coordinator Joey Estrella at 895-5977. Corporate tables of eight are available.

The 2014 class includes former UH-Hilo Athletic Director Bill Trumbo, tennis player Arthur Santos and softball pitcher Leo Sing Chow.

Family days at Waikoloa resort

HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit

Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross-country course.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, died in June 2009 after a battle with breast cancer.

Net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102.

The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9. All preregistered participants are guaranteed a shirt and goodie bag.

HI-PAL hoops sign-ups

HI-PAL is seeking teams interested in playing in “Click It or Ticket” 5-on-5 basketball tournaments Aug. 30-31 at Papaikou Gym and Sept. 12-14 at Waiakea Uka Gym.

Teams in the 5-6 division and 7-8 division are wanted for the August tournament, and in the 9-10 division and 11-12 division for the September tournament.

Deadline to submit completed forms is Aug. 22 for the August tournament and Sept. 1 for the September tournament.

The age cut-off for the tournaments is Dec. 31, 2014. Players are allowed to play on one team per division.

All HI-PAL roster, waiver and seat belt forms are required for participation.
