Kamehameha Schools donates $2K to HCC culinary program
Kamehameha Schools recently donated $2,000 to the Equip the Kitchens Campaign for the future Hawaii Community College-Palamanui.
The Aug. 6 donation was made during the ACF Kona Kohala Chefs Association’s monthly luncheon meeting at Roy’s Waikoloa Bar and Grill.
The donation was funded from proceeds raised during the 2014 Sam Choy’s Keauhou Poke Contest.
In addition, Kamehameha Schools donated $2,000 to the Kealii Pauahi Foundation.
“We at Kamehameha Schools know the value of growing our farmers and at the same time, the importance of growing our chefs,” Les Apoliona, land asset manager of Kamehameha Schools, said in a prepared statement. “The chef-farmer partnership is crucial to our island’s food sustainability and we’re happy to help the culinary effort at UH-Palamanui.”
The $200,000 Equip the Kitchens Campaign will fund kitchen appliances and equipment at Phase 1 of the long-awaited campus that remains under construction just north of Kona International Airport.
HPA holds open houses for prospective students
Hawaii Preparatory Academy is hosting a series of admission events for prospective day students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
A kindergarten open house for parents of prospective students will be held from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at the village campus. Parents will meet kindergarten teacher Hope Soo, and observe her class. Soo will provide an overview of the kindergarten program and share her philosophy on academic and social development during the kindergarten year.
An open house for prospective students entering grades one through eight and their families will be held at the village campus from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 7. School administrators, current students, and parents will provide information about the academic program and the benefits of an HPA education. Students and their families will also have an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet teachers, and learn more about lower and middle school curriculum and activities.

Prospective day students entering grades nine through 12 and their parents can register for one of six open house events that will be held Sept. 16, Oct. 13, 22, Nov. 13, 18, and Dec. 3. All high school events begin at 8:45 a.m. and end at 11, followed by an optional 30-minute question-and-answer session. Guests receive an in-depth look at the school’s academic, athletic, visual and performing arts programs. Each high school event is limited to 20 guests.

Rivera named to college dean’s list
Samuel K. Rivera of Waikoloa was named to the dean’s list for the March through May and May through July class sessions at the Columbia College Salt Lake City Campus.
To be named to the dean’s list a student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a four-point scale.
