Center for Plant Conservation names new director
John Robert Clark has been named executive director of The Center for Plant Conservation. The national nonprofit has participating institutions across the U.S., including Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden.
Clark takes on the position Oct. 13. The association of more than 40 botanical gardens, arboreta, and similar organizations, conserve the most imperiled plants of the United States and Canada. Clark will take up his duties at The Center for Plant Conservation’s headquarters in St. Louis, Mo.

Kona Traffic Safety Committee meets today
Residents may discuss traffic safety issues with state and county officials during the Kona Traffic Safety Committee meeting at 5 p.m. today in the Community Hale, Building G, at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Summer Cruise car show is Saturday
The Lanihau Center Summer Cruise will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lanihau Center.
The car show will feature classics, hot rods, sports cars, imports and VWs. The show will not include classes or trophies. A display will update attendees on the Kona Motorsport Park. The show is free; school supply donations will be accepted.

Donkey Mill Art Center announces schedule
Donkey Mill Art Center will hold several events in August and September.
“Ride the Breaks Artist Talk” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. Admission is free. Bring a dish for the potluck. Ride the Breaks is an annual festival celebrating hip hop culture through break-dancing, graffiti writing, deejaying, and emceeing.
Ono Gumbo will play from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Brewery Block in Kailua-Kona during a free, family-friendly event with art, vendors and food.
A self-guided live model drawing class will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and every other Friday. Cost is $12.50 or $25 a month by advance registration.
Materials safety will be taught by John Matsushita from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 23. Suggested donation is $10.
“Cutie and the Boxer” will be shown on film night Aug. 28. Suggested donation is $5; free popcorn will be served.
A beginning pottery class with Erik Omundson will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 29 through Oct. 10. Early registration is $150 for members, or $180 for nonmenbers plus a $45 supply fee. After Friday, cost will be $180 for members and $216 for nonmembers. Deadline to register is Aug. 22.

Cool Fusion: Festival of 1,000 Bowls will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. The event includes live music, food, and handcrafted ceramic artwork. Admission is $25 for adults and $12 for children, and includes a lunch of Japanese somen noodles served in a handmade pottery bowl to take home. Presale tickets are available for $20 for adults and $10 for children until Sept. 13.
Art for the Hawaii Craftsmen Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 29. Members and nonmembers are welcome to submit work to be considered for this year’s exhibition, to be held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School Oct. 10 through Nov. 1.
