Telethon today raises money for Red Cross in Hawaii
KHON2 is hosting today a telethon to raise money for the American Red Cross, Hawaii State Chapter.
Phone lines will be open from 4:30 to 8 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. at 591-6336. Look for on-air coverage during “Wake Up 2Day” and updates during KHON2 News at 5 and 6 p.m.
Besides distributing more than 18,000 relief items such as tarps, batteries and coolers, and serving more than 4,000 meals and snacks, Red Cross volunteer nurses and mental health workers have helped 900 residents with health assessments and crisis counseling.
The Red Cross is the only nonprofit that is on call to respond to disasters big and small.
Spirit Day celebrates history of Kaloko-Honokohau
Descendants, friends, the community, and park volunteers are invited to Spirit Day from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 23 at Aiopio fishtrap at Honokohau Beach. Spirit Day celebrates the 40th anniversary of the “Spirit of Ka-loko, Hono-ko-hau,” a document that was written in 1974 that proposed the establishment of a Kaloko-Honokohau National Cultural Park.
In addition to celebrating the report, Spirit Day will gather, honor and sustain descendants of the area. Families that would like to share stories of their time in the area should contact the park. Following opening protocol, the history of the Spirit Report will be shared, along with history of the area and stories from descendants. There will be kanikapila music. Light pupu will be served.

Basford completes basic training
Air Force Airman Travis W. Basford graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Basford is the son of Tara Rogers and Steven Basford of Keaau. He is a 2013 graduate of Keaau High School.
Composting workshops offered
Backyard composting workshops offered by Recycle Hawaii will help attendees reap the benefits of improved soil.
Cost is $10 per adult with no charge for children. A voucher for a free Earth Machine backyard composter is given for each household completing the workshop.
Backyard Composting Workshops are taught by master composter and recycler Ann Hassler and cover basic composting techniques plus composting with worms. Worm bins and worms are available for purchase at the workshop. To register, email Hassler at crazy4compost2@gmail.com or call 937-1100.
The West Hawaii workshops will be from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 20 at Montessori Education Center of Hawaii, 65-1297 Opelo Rd. in Waimea; and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Waikoloa Village Association community room, 68-1792 Melia St. in Waikoloa.
In addition, Waimea compost workshops are offered every other Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. by Samantha Robinson and Noah Dodd at the Waimea Homestead Farmers Market. Their session covers basic aerobic composting, sheet, worm, and bokashi composting. Her next workshop is slated for Saturday.

Health fair slated at Kealakekua Ranch Center
A health and wellness fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at Kealakekua Ranch Center will encourage attendees to have fun and get healthy.
Free health screenings and information, entertainment, family games and prizes are planned. Several government agencies, businesses and nonprofits will participate.
Hospice holds floating lantern ceremony Sunday
North Hawaii Hospice will host its fourth annual floating lantern ceremony from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii. The ceremony at Coconut Grove will include music, hula, taiko drummers and Hawaiian chanting and will be followed by a sunset lantern release into Pauoa Bay.
Lantern floating is an Asian tradition that symbolizes the wish for all beings to live in peaceful coexistence. As the lanterns are released onto the ocean, they take with them healing prayers to honor and remember those who have passed. Lanterns are collected at the end of the release, the bases are saved and the papers are collected, dried and burned.
