Contestants for poke contest sought

Hawaii Island Festival organizers are looking for more contestants for Saturday’s poke contest at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa.

The entry fee is $10, which includes a festival ribbon. The first 40 contestants receive six pounds of fish for their poke recipe. The categories are traditional, poke with limu, poke with soy sauce and cooked poke. Contact Linda Pokipala at 937-4896.

AARP driver safety class scheduled

Kona Palisades Association is sponsoring an AARP Smart Driver class at 1 p.m. Aug. 25 at the Palisades Recreation Center on lower Kaiminani Drive. Geared toward the older driver, the class does not include driving or written tests, only quizzes. It covers subjects that may affect drivers as they age, such as hearing, eyesight, reflexes, safety rules, road rage, rules of the road, problems at intersections, drinking and driving, as well as other subjects.

Some participants may receive a discount on their auto insurance after completing the class.

Class size is limited. To register for the class, call Reni or Roy Damron at 325-5422.

Sunday event geared toward mothers

Mothers of all ages and stages are invited to “Mom-O-Rama,” a free celebration of everything about moms and their health from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the HMSA Center in Hilo, 3034 E. Makaala St.

Moms can enjoy a mini-massage and light pupu, games and giveaways. They can also network with other women. Activities for keiki will be offered.

Hospitals announce new board members

Kona Community and Kohala hospitals recently welcomed five new members to the West Hawaii Region Board of Directors as it also bid farewell to outgoing members.

New board of director members are Mark Danderson, Dr. Gary Goldberg, Dr. Edwin Gramlich, Dr. Frank Sayre and Steven Sparks. July 1 was the term start date for these members.

“Delivering quality health care is becoming increasingly complex,” said Bill Cliff, board chair.

“Additionally, we face a number of financial realities that are unique to our state. The expertise of our new members will enhance our board’s ability to fulfill our mission to provide the best possible health care for all West Hawaii residents.”

Danderson is the president of MDanderson Consulting Group, specializing in business development and product launches in the Asia and Pacific region. Danderson has 25 years of experience in medical publishing and education in America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Goldberg is an emergency physician and physician director of emergency services at North Hawaii Community Hospital. As a hospital based physician, Goldberg is skilled in physician management and working as part of a hospital team to create high quality patient-centered care.

Gramlich is a retired physician and longtime resident of West Hawaii. Gramlich’s extensive medical experience includes primary care as a U.S. naval flight surgeon, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry as well as health care communications and conflict resolution. Gramlich joined Kona Community Hospital in 2001 as a psychiatrist. He served as medical director to the hospital’s long-term care unit from 2006 to 2008.

Sayre recently retired from 45-year career in general dentistry. Sayre was a member of the Kona Community Hospital surgical staff as well as HHSC’s management advisory committee for West Hawaii. Sayre has a long history of community commitment.

Sparks is a real estate consultant new to West Hawaii. For the past 44 years, Sparks has acted as a commercial appraiser and consultant for special purchase properties including a full range of medical properties such as acute care hospitals in 38 states. Sparks’ background in the health care industry and specifically construction techniques and costs will be a positive contribution to the board and community.

The newly appointed board members join sitting members Bill Cliff, chairman, Renee Inaba, vice chairwoman, Reginald T. Morimoto, secretary/treasurer, Joel Gimpel, Dr. Richard McDowell, Richard Taaffe and Reed Flickinger to round out the 2014-2015 West Hawaii Region Board of Directors.

Outgoing board members because of term expirations are Dr. Alistair Bairos, Dr. Kevin Kunz, Patti Aoki, Daniel Rick, and David Kaapu.

Bridge League | Aug. 1 to Aug. 15

Results of the American Contract Bridge League play at the Kona Bridge Club:

Aug. 1: First place winners were Dan Sabo and Jim Elstran; second, Lois Griffiths and Susan Kaneta.

Aug. 4: Barbara Eichelbarger and Jim Elstran came in first, while Elizabeth Reid and Chuck Clark came in second.

Aug. 6: First went to Pat Ingoglia and Dan Sabo; seconds Craig Ross and Dean Jenkins.

Aug. 10: North/south first place winners were Shirley Decker and Sharon Bolton. Second place went to Nancy Palmer and Barbara Eichelbarger. East/west first place winners were Mary Dee Overton and Liz Holey; second, Gail Mullen and Lynn Puri.

Aug. 11: Lois Griffiths and Dean Jenkins took first. Barbara Eichelbarger and Jim Elstran came in second.

Aug. 13: First, went to Jim Elstran and Chuck Clark; second, Mary Dee Overton and Colette Pirie.

Aug. 15: First place winners were Nancy Palmer and Jim Elstran. Tied for second were Susan Kaneta and Lois Griffiths,

and Susan Brown and Chuck Clark.
