Youth kukui nut lei class planned
The Department of Parks and Recreation is planning an afterschool kukui nut sanding and lei making activity for youth ages 8 to 14 years old. The event will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 16, 23 and 30 at Kailua Park/Kekuaokalani Gym.

Gift boxes for needy kids collected in November
This November, Operation Christmas Child volunteers will support thousands of drop-off sites nationwide where gift-filled shoeboxes will be collected and eventually hand-delivered to a child in need. For many children, this represents the first gift they have ever received.
“School supplies are among the items most needed by shoebox recipients and now is the perfect time to take advantage of sales to purchase as many supplies as possible,” said Rick Eilerman of Naalehu.
Eilerman is one of more than 100,000 year-round volunteers nationwide—including eight in Naalehu, Waimea, and Kailua-Kona—who serves Operation Christmas Child.

Women invited to shoot some hoops
The Department of Parks and Recreation will be holding a women’s basketball league for ages 15 and older. League play is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesdays Sept. 16 through Oct 28.

Garage sale will fund scholarships
Alpha Delta Kappa Iota, a teacher’s sorority, will hold a rummage sale Saturday in Kailua-Kona.
The sale runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kona Church of the Nazarene on Palani Road. Money earned from the rummage sale will fund scholarships for two Kona seniors.
Boyd gives three Hawaii history talks
North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau will present three talk story sessions on Hawaii’s history with North Kohala historian, Boyd D. Bond.
The first session at 6:30 p.m. Monday will focus on “The Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1870s and 1970s.” In the second presentation on Sept. 29, Bond will discuss “Horses and Horsemanship in the Islands.” For the final program on Oct. 27, Bond will give a “Broad History of Waimea.”
Each hour-long presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Bond’s knowledge of Hawaii’s history stems from his academic studies and from a lifetime spent in Hawaii as a sixth generation descendent of early western settlers. Boyd was raised in a sugar plantation family, living on plantations throughout the state.

Museums honor each other’s memberships in September
Hawaii Island museums are collaborating to open their doors to other museums’ members in September.
Each of the 12 museums will provide free admission to members of other participating institutions when a current membership card is shown. Some institutions will also be offering discounts on store items or tours to these members.
