Radio broadcasts from Kahilu
On Sunday,the audience at Waimea’s Kahilu Theatre will have the opportunity to put their applause on-air, in the first of three “Applause from the Kahilu” concerts.
The 4 p.m. performance will showcase Hawaii Island artists and will be recorded for broadcast by Hawaii Public Radio. Sunday’s show features Ekolu Mea Nui with Sonny Lim, Kevin Kealoha and Kunia Galdeira, performance poet Michele Dalton, from Puna, and paniolo music from Willie-Joe Camara and Damien de Mello. The 90-minute show includes music, talk-story, and song, hosted on-air and on-stage by Kahilu’s artistic and managing director Tim Bostock.
The broadcast date for the first “Applause from the Kahilu” concert will be Oct. 26. This is the first of three such concerts happening this fall, with the second on Sept. 21 and, the third on Nov. 16.
Tickets range from $5 to $20 depending on seating. Tickets are available at kahilutheatre.org/Shows, by phone at 885-6868, or at the theater.
Kona Hawaiian Civic Club fundraiser set
Tickets are $30 and can be ordered by calling KC Mahoney at 769-8148. Donations are welcome with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Three scholarships were awarded this year to graduating seniors from Konawaena and Kealakehe High Schools.
Holualoa arts foundation gets grant from Target
The funds will benefit the in-school art program at Holualoa Elementary School. Teams of local artists collaborate with academic teachers in the classrooms. Annually, 225 children participate in this project.
‘Abstract Only’ event draws crowd
The Juror’s Choice Award went to Monika Mann for her painting on Plexiglas “Shelter Me.” First place was “Oliver and Lola” by Kristine Kubat. Second place was the wood sculpture “Aquatica” by Frank McClure. Third place was the collage painting “Musical Journey” by Karen Mortensen. The fourth place award went to Joesph Ruesing’s “Self Portrait.”
Attendees are invited to come vote for the People’s Choice Award by Aug. 28. Artists should pick up their work between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Aug. 29.
