HONOLULU — Authorities say an out-of-control brush fire burning in steep, rough terrain in upper Makakilo has forced the evacuation of about 20 homes and damaged one.

Capt. David Jenkins said early Saturday that about 100 Honolulu firefighters battled the blaze Friday evening and then demobilized overnight, watching to ensure no other structures were damaged.

Jenkins says the fire was moving toward about 20 evacuated cabins on Palehua Road. He says large tree surround the homes, so it will be difficult to protect them if the flames draw closer.

Crews are focused on protecting homes and cellphone towers, not on trying to extinguish the blaze yet. Jenkins says one home has minor damage to a door.

The weather was calm early Saturday, but officials expected winds to pick up later.

An emergency shelter briefly opened Friday night.
