Labor Day weekend rodeo action at Parker Ranch

The 40th annual Parker Ranch Round-Up Club Rodeo will be Saturday and Sunday at the Parker Ranch Rodeo Arena in Waimea.

The event is a fundraiser to provide scholarships for school-age children of Parker Ranch employees.

Rodeo action starts at noon both days, featuring events such as team roping, double mugging and bull riding. On Sunday, the Round-Up Club, in partnership with Parker Ranch, will host a live horse auction; registration starts at 9 a.m.

There will be vendors, food and refreshments with events till 5 p.m.

Tickets are $7 per person in advance from the Parker Ranch Store at the Parker Ranch Center and at Parker Ranch headquarters in Waimea, or $8 at the gate. Children 12 and under are free. For more information, call 885-7311.

Fishing tournament a benefit for veterans

The Veterans Helping Veterans fishing tournament is slated Aug. 29-30.

Registration, food and a silent auction will be 5-7:30 p.m. Aug. 29, at the Hawaii Big Game Fishing Club clubhouse. Fishing starts at 7 a.m. Aug. 30, and the banquet follows at 6 p.m.

The entry fee is $300 per boat/team of four anglers and two crew. A portion of the fees plus all of the silent auction proceeds will go to the Kona Posts of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Senior softball fall league

The senior slowpitch softball fall league will begin Sept. 7. Games start at 10 a.m. at Old Kona Airport Park.

Waimea offers bubble ball soccer league

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is registering participants for an indoor bubble ball soccer league from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2 at Thelma Parker Gym.

Games will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Rosters are limited to six players, age 12 and older. There are eight teams in the league.

Waimea offers instructional tennis

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, is holding sign-ups for instructional tennis at Waimea Park.

The free clinics are instructed by tennis pro Jeff Lewis, director of Rutgers Tennis Center at Hawaii Preparatory Academy. Clinics will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 18. The program is limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 and 10 and older.

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will hold a Biddy Basketball league.

The league will be Sept. 15 to Oct. 22. The games will be played at various gyms, starting at 4:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

UH-Hilo Hall of Fame induction ceremony

The 2014 Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.

HCC Time Trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” takes place at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, heads north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at the 85 mile marker. Registration is at the cemetery from 7-7:40 a.m.

HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit

Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross country course.

Bieni Kohler-Johnson, who graduated from HPA in 1983, died in June 2009 after a battle with breast cancer.

Net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102.

The top fundraiser will receive the grand prize of a two-night stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. The runner-up will receive a round of golf for four at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Fundraisers do not need to be present to win. Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9. All preregistered participants are guaranteed a shirt and goodie bag.

HI-PAL hoops sign-ups

HI-PAL is seeking teams interested in playing in “Click It or Ticket” 5-on-5 basketball tournament Sept. 12-14 at Waiakea Uka Gym.
