Fish Hopper matches donations for Puna storm victims

The Fish Hopper Restaurant in Kailua-Kona has launched a challenge to the community to help Puna residents impacted by Tropical Storm Iselle.

The Sabu Shake Sr. Charitable Foundation, set up in memory of the restaurant’s founder, will match up to $5,000 in new donations to the Salvation Army’s Disaster Relief Fund for Puna.

Donations may be made at salvationarmyhawaii.org or by calling The Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division headquarters at 988-2136. Donations may also be placed in a Salvation Army red kettle at the restaurant.

Historical talk is tonight

Kona Historical Society will present today a lecture titled “Hawaii Scenic Byways: Mamalahoa Kona Heritage Corridor and Royal Footsteps Along the Kona Coast.”

The talk will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at West Hawaii Civic Center.

Tomoe Nimori and Debbie Baker will explore Kona along Alii Drive and Mamalahoa Highway, now both designated as Scenic Byways. Nimori is vice president of Pulama Ia Kona Heritage Preservation Council and a board member of the Kona Historical Society. Baker is the executive director of the Kailua Village Business Improvement District and on the board of the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce.

Class provides eligibility for coffee farmer voucher program

The Kona Coffee Farmers Association will hold a refresher workshop Thursday for eligibility in their Mycotrol and Botanigard voucher program.

The class will be held from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources office in Kainaliu. Everyone is invited. A refresher workshop is required to qualify for the 50 percent off voucher for up to 2 gallons of Mycotrol or Botanigard from Farm and Garden, paid for by a Hawaii Department of Agriculture grant to Kona Coffee Farmers Association.

Food for storm victims collected Saturday

Kona Commons will be collecting canned goods and pet food for Tropical Storm Iselle victims from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A drive-through collection will be set up in the Bank of Hawaii parking lot across from Target.

Canned goods rich in protein such as tuna, Spam and kidney beans are needed. Dry bags or cans of dog and cat food are also needed and monetary donations are welcome. Checks may be made out to Food Basket.

Park traffic diverted during fair

Starting Friday, the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will implement temporary traffic-safety measures at Old Kona Airport Park to accommodate the E.K. Fernandez Big Island Fair.

Traffic entering the park will be diverted to the beach access road at the north end of Kuakini Highway. This will ensure safety of park users, fair attendees, and fair operators. Motorists are asked to follow a temporary 5 mph speed limit on the beach access road. This speed limit will be in effect until normal traffic patterns are reinstated Sept. 11.

Blood drives planned in West Hawaii

Upcoming blood drives are planned to provide blood supply for Hawaii’s patients.

Blood may be donated from 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Sept. 1 in the LDS Kona Stake Center cultural hall at 75-230 Kalani St.; from 10 a.m to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at LDS Waimea Hawaii Ward, 65-1168 Kapiolani Rd.; or from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m Sept. 3 at the LDS Kona Stake Center cultural hall.

Drives are subject to change. Call 848-4770 or visit bbh.org to schedule an appointment. Blood donors must be in good health, be 18 years of age or older or 17 with signed Blood Bank of Hawaii consent form and weigh 110 pounds or more. Bring a valid photo ID with date of birth.
