Family fair held on Labor Day

The Christ Church annual Up Country Faire will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.

The event includes food, a waterslide and a petting zoo. A silent auction and rummage sale are also highlights.

The fair will be held at the Christ Church Episcopal campus at the corner of Mamalahoa Highway and Konawaena School Road. Call 323-3429 for more information.

Waikoloa housing project meeting is today

Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation invites the public to an informational meeting about its Kamakoa Mutual Self-Help Housing Project to be built in the county’s Kamakoa Nui development in Waikoloa. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. today in the Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School cafeteria.

The project will be comprised of 10 single-family, three-bedroom homes and will be built with the help of the qualified families. All participants will receive instruction in home construction. Financing will be provided by USDA Rural Development.

Drivers advised to watch out for convoys

Oahu-based Marines will convoy from Kawaihae to Pohakuloa Training Area between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday.

Convoys will use Akoni Pule Corridor, Queen Kaahumanu Highway, Waikoloa Road, Mamalahoa Highway and the Daniel K. Inouye Highway. Motorists are advised to be alert and drive with care.

Elks hold drawing for a Volkswagen Beetle

Kona Elks Lodge 2616 is holding a drawing to win a yellow 1999 Volkswagen Beetle. Tickets are $10 each or 12 for $100. Proceeds will benefit community projects and programs supported by the Elks. The drawing will be held at 3 p.m on Labor Day at the lodge.

Public may participate in upcoming Chigo parade

In honor of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin’s 125th anniversary, community members are invited to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime Chigo parade at 9 a.m. Nov. 23.

Chigo is a longtime tradition to honor the emperor, ministers and temple and noble families by dressing as celestial beings. Children ages 3 to 10 who are shorter than 5 feet and weigh less than 100 pounds may participate. Cost is $100. Applications are available at the temple office at 398 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo. The deadline to apply is Sunday.

Support group for moms begins soon

Kona Moms is a nonprofit support group for mothers that begins Sept. 16. Meetings will be held bimonthly from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity.
