Tracy wins prestigious Pierre Bowman award
Aloha Performing Arts Company artistic director Jerry Tracy was honored with the Hawaii State Theatre Council’s prestigious Pierre Bowman award at its annual Pookela Awards Banquet, held recently in Kaneohe, Oahu. The event celebrated excellence in the various aspects of theater including acting, directing, choreography and designing.
The Pierre Bowman Award has been presented each year since 1986 to “a person whose lifetime achievement reflects courage and commitment to quality, and through whose efforts the life of theater in Hawaii has been uplifted.” The award is named after Pierre Bowman, longtime drama critic for the Honolulu Star Bulletin and The Honolulu Advertiser.
Tracy worked as a freelance actor, director and writer for 16 years on Oahu before moving to Hawaii Island in 1991. He regularly teaches Tuesday Troupers, a theater skills class for 8- through 12-year-olds, and is currently directing Aloha Performing Art Company’s next main stage production, the Gothic musical thriller “Jekyll and Hyde,” which opens Oct. 10.
Pop-up show set for September
Patrick O’Kiersey is holding a pop-up show in September at the Hasegawa Building, 45-3593 Mamane St. in Honokaa.
The first viewing and reception will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 4. Regular hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with receptions at 6 p.m. Sept. 5, 19 and 26.

Wailoa Center hosts ‘Abstract Only’ event
Despite bad weather, the opening reception for the Wailoa Center’s “Abstract Only” event was well-attended. Winners were announced and Moon Brown and Gary Washburn provided music.
The Juror’s Choice Award went to Monika Mann for her painting on Plexiglas “Shelter Me.” First place was “Oliver and Lola” by Kristine Kubat. Second place was the wood sculpture “Aquatica” by Frank McClure. Third place was the collage painting “Musical Journey” by Karen Mortensen. The fourth place award went to Joesph Ruesing’s “Self Portrait.”

Kona Seniors Art Club show Sept. 5
The Kona Seniors Art Club will have a show 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 5 in the gazebo at West Hawaii Civic Center. The event will include music and light refreshments.
Grove leading block print class
Block print artist Gretchen Grove will lead a day of creating linoleum block prints of native species from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 9 on the lanai at Wailoa Center.
Attendees will learn how to translate photos into drawings, transfer the drawing to linoleum, carve and print the image. No experience is required. Materials fee is $10. This workshop is in association with the Hawaii Nei Art Show.
Yao to present class on Togodoo, Mandala
Moses Yao will present a community celebration of Togodoo and Mandala from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art.
Yao of Ghana, West Africa invites the public this free session in creating a togodoo and manadala, which will be displayed Sept. 5 at the trash show. Togodoo is a circular image created with natural icons depicting primal patterns.
Participants should bring small recycled items and icons of significance such as stone, shells and beads.

Alohahas comedy troupe kicks off season Sept. 6
The Alohahas Improvisation-Sketch-Comedy Company kicks off the fall season Sept. 6 at Aloha Theatre with their new show, “Back to School Special — With A Side of Sauce.” Doors open at 7 p.m.; the show starts at 7:30.
The Alohahas, based on Hawaii Island, is a company of practicing and performing improv-sketch-comedy artists. The show features members of the company performing a variety of improvisation art styles and improvisation games centered around audience suggestions and participation. New and original comedy sketches written and performed by the improv members are also part of the show.

Kona Choral Society open house Wednesday
The Kona Choral Society welcomes all interested singers to an open house Wednesday in the Kealakehe Intermediate School band room.
Newcomers should arrive at 5:30 p.m. and returning singers should come at 6. The event ends at 8 p.m. No auditions are required. Weekly rehearsals will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. Fall rehearsals will culminate in holiday-themed concerts in December.
