HONOLULU — Authorities on Thursday approved spending additional money for a study that will determine whether to replace or renovate the aging Aloha Stadium.
The Honolulu Star Advertiser reports the Aloha Stadium Authority voted to spend $155,000 to fund the multi-phase study process into early 2015.
A New York-based law firm, Foley and Lardner, is leading the study. It will determine whether it’s best to renovate the 50,000-seat stadium which opened in 1975 or to build a new stadium with fewer seats. The target is between 30,000 to 35,000 seats.
The state Department of Accounting and General Services has estimated the stadium needs $120 million in improvements to operate in the next five to 10 years.
Cost estimates for a new, smaller stadium range from $132 million to $190 million.
