A few more efforts like this, and coach Dave Shoji may just decide to retire.

Undone by poor hitting, the No. 17 University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team was swept by No. 25 Arizona State on Saturday night, 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

About the only Wahine to have a match worth talking about was junior outside hitter Tai Manu-Olevao, who posted nine kills on .304 hitting and 12 digs.

Hawaii (1-1), which returns three starters in Shoji’s 40th season on the bench, hit only .160. UH’s 11 service errors only compounded the problem.

Macey Gardner smacked 16 kills for the Sun Devils (2-0), including seven in the second set as Arizona State fought back from a 18-14 deficit.

Outside hitter Kalei Greeley posted six kills for the Wahine. The freshman will likely see her role increase when Hawaii finishes play at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational with a match at 5:30 p.m. Sunday against San Diego State (0-2). Manu-Olevao is expected to sit out because of religious beliefs.
