Parker students score high on Advanced Placement exams
Parker School’s Advanced Placement test results for the 2013-14 school year resulted in a 98 percent pass rate.
Approximately 41 Parker students took AP tests and the 98 percent reflects the percentage of those students who received a score of three or higher. AP test scores range from one to five, with five being highest. A score of three or higher indicates a passing score.
The state average pass rate is 53.4 percent and the global average is 61.3 percent. Of the 71 total AP exams taken by the 41 Parker students last school year, 67 were scored at a three or higher, resulting in a 94 percent pass rate of all AP tests taken.
Parker 2014 graduates Malia Davis, Marie Jobes, Kyley Nishimura and Emily Whitfield were listed as AP Scholars; 2014 graduate Grant Nair and current Parker seniors Luke Potter and Maia Tarnas were listed as AP Scholars with Honor; 2014 graduates Breanna Bellatti, Tawny Bright, Lysha Matsunobu and Maddison Nelson were named AP Scholars with Distinction; and Lysha Matsunobu was named National AP Scholar.
Scholarship applicants sought
Applications are being accepted for $1,000 Moku o Kohala college scholarships. The awards will be available for a limited number of students based on financial need, academic standing of a 2.5 GPA or higher with a demonstrated commitment for success.

3 West Hawaii students headed to Lehigh University
Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., is welcoming three West Hawaii students in its class of 2018: John Austin of Waimea, Cannon Greco Hiranaka of Waimea and Russell Laros of Kailua-Kona.

Hannum begins studies at University of Findlay
Darienne Hannum of Waimea has been admitted to The University of Findlay as a member of the 2014 incoming class. Approximately 730 new students began their studies at the school Aug. 18. Hannum, whose major is equestrian studies, is a graduate of Honokaa High School.
As one of the largest private universities in northwest Ohio, The University of Findlay ranks in the top tier of the U.S. News &World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” in the Midwest and was named a “Best Midwestern College” by the Princeton Review.
