County presents Keiki Triathlon
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League will hold the third annual Keiki Triathlon as part of the Mayor’s Health Fest 2014 on Oct. 18, at Old Kona Airport Park.
Children ages 7 to 14 are invited to participate in a miniature version of the Ironman World Championship: 100-yard swim, 3.2-mile bicycle race and 1-mile run. The 7- and 8-year-olds will race half those distances.
The entrance fee is $5 per child. Registration ends Oct. 3. Forms are available at county swimming pools, gymnasiums and other staffed recreational sites, or can be downloaded at hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation.

To ensure the athletes’ safety, enrollment will be limited to the first 30 children who sign up in each of the four age-group divisions or a maximum of 120 racers. Participants must supply their own bicycle, helmet, swim goggles and other equipment.
Racers must check in by 7:30 a.m. race day. The youngest children will start the triathlon by entering the Kona Community Aquatic Center pool at 8 a.m. They will be followed by the older age-group divisions.
The Health Fest will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
Senior softball fall league
The senior slowpitch softball fall league will begin Sept. 7. Games start at 10 a.m. at Old Kona Airport Park.
Players must be 50 or older. The fee is $10 per player.

Waimea offers volleyball league
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, will accept registrations for age-group volleyball season beginning at 3 p.m. Sept. 9-11, during clinic days at Thelma Parker Gym.
Clinics begin at 3:30 p.m. for ages 9-10, 4:30 ages 11-12 and 13-14.
The league runs from Oct. 14 to Nov. 19, Tuesdays and Thursdays in October; Mondays and Wednesdays in November. The games start at 4:30 p.m. at various gyms.
Fees are $10 payable to Waimea Athletics. Volunteer coaches are needed.

Brantley Center to host races
The Brantley Center will host its third annual Honokaa 5K, half-marathon and 30K Waipio Challenge on Oct. 18.
Races start at 6:30 a.m. at the Honokaa Sports Complex.
Registration fees are $30 for the 5K, $65 for the half-marathon and $75 for the 30K. Prices will increase Aug. 31. The fee includes entertainment, refreshments, aid stations on the course, finisher medals for the half-marathon and 30K finishers and T-shirts for all participants. There will also be age-group awards.

Fitness paddleboard, canoe race
Mauna Lani Bay Hotels and Bungalows presents its fourth annual Hulakai and Da Hui Race to Fitness series beginning Sept. 27.
The 7.2-mile race starts from Kiholo Bay and finishes at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. The top three finishers receive prizes.
The race is open to standup and OC paddlers of all ages and skill levels.

HCC Time Trial
The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” takes place at 8 a.m. Sept. 20. The course starts at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, heads north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at mile marker 85. Registration is at the cemetery from 7-7:40 a.m.
