Big Island police arrest 16 for suspected DUI

Hawaii Island police arrested 16 motorists for suspected driving under the influence of an intoxicant between Sept. 1 and Sunday. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under age 21.

So far this year, there have been 809 DUI arrests compared with 878 during the same period last year, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

There have been 1,073 major accidents this year compared with 943 during the same period last year.

There have been nine traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island this year compared with 21 during the same period last year.

To date, three fatalities were related to drugs and three were related a combination of both drugs and alcohol.
