Robert Sterne Jr.

Robert H. Sterne Jr., 75, of Waimea died Aug. 24, 2014, at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born Nov. 30, 1938, in Philadelphia, he worked in the metals industry.

Friends may call at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea for a 10 a.m. service. A pot luck reception will follow. Family requests casual attire be worn. He is survived by wife, Barbara Sterne of Waimea; son, Jason Sterne of Auburn, N.Y.; daughter, Brooke (Ted) Sterne Whittemore of West Hartford, Conn.; three grandchildren; brother, Edward (Jean) Sterne of Dallastown, Penn.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dennis Frederickson

Dennis William Frederickson, 65, of Pahoa died July 30, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in California, he was a chef and a musician.

Friends may call at noon Sept. 14 at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki for a service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by daughters, Hanalei (Michael) Benn, Kriya Benn; sons, Timothy Benn, Michael Benn, Keahi Benn, Lava Benn, all of Pahoa; parents, Ralph and Nell Benn of Tennessee; brother, Danny Benn of Maui; sisters, Robin (Roger) Stoller of Tennessee, Lisa Garske of Kona; five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

William Akau

William Ahyou “Papa Akau” Akau, 87, of Kawaihae died Aug. 20, 2014, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born in Waiemi, he retired from the State Department of Transportation as harbor master of Kawaihae Harbor. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Waimea first ward, Hawaii Rifle Association, was a former Aloha Week Moi, Ihilani, a former member of Alii Aimoku of Ke Alo Alii and of Na Papa Kanaka o Puu Kohola Heiau. He was also a pilot boat operator and an advocate for public shoreline access in Kawaihae.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Waimea for a 1 p.m. service. Burial will follow at Waimea County Cemetery, Mormon section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by brothers, Ala Akau Sr. of Pearl City, Oahu and Solomon Akau of Kawaihae; sisters, Lani Akau, Rosie Akau-Wilkins, both of Kawaihae and Wilma Nance of Galveston, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins.

Brenda Wilcox

Brenda Louise Wilcox, 61, of Waimea died Aug. 14, 2014, at her residence. Born Jan. 6, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, she was a homemaker, caregiver and member of Honokaa Methodist Church and Holualoa Chapel.

Services will be held at a later date.

She is survived by husband, Allen Wilcox of Waimea, sons, Nathan (Jessica) Waldon of Tennessee, Elias Waldon of Kailua-Kona, Zachary (Camille) Waldon of Honolulu, Luke (Sandra) Waldon of Sweden, stepmother, Peggy Buchholz of Iowa, stepdaughter, Kauikeolani Wilcox of Hilo, stepson, Christopher Wilcox of Waimea, half-sister Amy (Kevin) Burpee of Iowa, brothers, Joe (Jane) Buchholz of Volcano, Tim (Cheri) Buchholz of Arizona, Jeff (Wang) Buchholz of Kailua-Kona, Rick Buchholz of Arizona, five grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Christina Fujiyama

Christina “Tita” Keahalani Fujiyama, 25, of Keaau died Aug. 17, 2014, at Hilo Medical Center.

Born Sept. 28, 1988, in Hilo, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by fiance, Seth Spidell Sr.; sons, Seth Spidell Jr., Sage Spidell; daughter, Sina Spidell; mother and step-father, Christine Asuncion-Mattos and Russel Mattos, all of of Keaau; grandparents, Solomon and Mary Jane Fujiyama of Hilo and Edward Asuncion of Keaau; brothers, Miles (Jessica) Fujiyama, Russel Mattos Jr.; sister, Ariel Fujiyama, all of Keaau; one nephew; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Ronny Slaughter

Ronny Lynn Slaughter, 54, of Pahoa died Aug. 17, 2014. Born Dec. 4, 1959, in Coalinga, Calif., he was a cook.

Private services were held.

He is survived by daughter, Teri Kumre; son, Anthony Thomas, both of Gulfport, Miss.; parents, Marvin and Patsy Slaughter of Clovis, Calif.; sisters, Rhonda Slaughter, Robin Dozier, both of Sacramento, Calif.; hanai brother, Greg Rodenbaugh of Pahoa; two grandchildren, five nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews; several aunts and uncles, and hanai family.

Phyllis Abner

Phyllis Ann Abner, 83, of Kailua-Kona, died Aug. 27, 2014, at her residence. Born March 18, 1931, in Harrisburg, Pa., she was a retired business owner and a volunteer with Friends of NELHA.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Friends of NELHA at 73-4460 Queen Kaahuman Hwy., Suite 125, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740.

She is survived by daughter, Debbie (Dave) Chrisman of Kailua-Kona, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.

Jerome McVay

Jerome Charles McVay, 77, of Hilo died Aug. 11, 2014, at Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Chicago, he was a retired school teacher and veteran of the U.S. Army.

He is survived by daughter, Cathy (Tyson) McVay Black of Keaau; son, Kevin McVay of Las Vegas; brothers, Donald (Sandi) McVay, Richard (Lynda) McVay, both of Seattle; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

Joseph Amormino Sr.

Joseph Amormino Sr., 74, of Pahoa died Aug. 23, 2014, on Oahu. Born Jan. 17, 1940, in Detroit, he was a retired adult corrections officer and a U.S. Army veteran.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Sept. 9 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Burial will follow at Alae Cemetery, Mormon section. Family requests casual attire be worn.

Earl Medeiros

Earl “Stanley” Medeiros, 74, of Hawi died Aug. 23, 2014, at Kona Community Hospital. Born Jan. 19, 1940, in Kapaau, he was a cowboy, a rancher and a mechanic.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 20 at Keokea Beach Park in North Kohala for an 11:30 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date.

He is survived by son, Michael (Gina Karratti) Medeiros of Kapaau; sisters, Maxine (Antone) Cazimero of Niulii, Margaret (Gary) Caravalho of Waikoloa, Sylvia (Charles) Hoffman of Rio Vista, Calif.; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews.
