Educational programs to train farmers

Two programs aimed at introducing high school students and aspiring farmers on Hawaii Island to agricultural careers are seeking applicants for upcoming cohorts in October.

Ku I Ka Mana, a beginning farmer and rancher training program administered by The Kohala Center, is accepting applications from prospective students for its fourth cohort. The 30-session course begins Oct. 17 and is conducted in Honokaa from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Fridays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. More information and application materials are available at kohalacenter.org/farmertraining/application or by calling The Kohala Center at 887-6411. The deadline to apply is Oct. 10.

Open to Hawaii Island high school students and recent graduates, the fourth cohort of The center’s weeklong High School Agriculture Internship Program will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 6 through 10. More information and applications are available at kohalacenter.org/farmertraining/internships or by calling the center. The deadline to apply is Oct. 1.

With the aina serving as their classroom, interns are introduced to various aspects of agriculture in Hawaii through site visits to Waipio, Kohala, Hamakua, Kona, and Hilo. Participants gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture, learn about island food systems, and receive a $125 stipend upon completion.

Teachers encouraged to apply for Space Foundation Scholarship

The Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship is given annually by the Space Foundation to provide professional development for a qualified educator of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry, or who works with prekindergarten- through 12th-grade students of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry.

The recipient will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., during the summer of 2015 for one of the Space Foundation’s weeklong Space Across the Curriculum courses.

These intensive graduate-level summer courses for educators provide space-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics content that is instantly transferable to the classroom.

The facilities at Space Foundation World Headquarters in Colorado Springs offer extraordinary teaching tools, including Science On a Sphere, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration with more than 360 datasets, special software, satellite imagery and four projectors to render images that provide full-motion views of the Earth, sun, moons and planets in space. Space Foundation labs also offer programmable robots used in a simulated Martian environment, and sophisticated software programs used by professional aerospace engineers.

The Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship covers tuition, fees, expenses and lodging for the recipient. Apply for the scholarship by submitting a letter, not exceeding two pages, detailing the motivation for applying and interest in integrating space themes into the classroom. The application letter must be endorsed with a letter of support by a principal or other supervisor.
