The Kailua Village Artists are offering the work of gyotaku artist J.W. “Bill” Twibell at their gallery in the Kona Marketplace.

Twibell’s career includes teaching gyotaku fish printing for 25 years through Humboldt State University Extension Program, and he held numerous other workshops. Gyotaku fish prints are made directly from fresh specimens by pressing rice paper or textiles directly on top of oil-based inked fish or plants. The eyes are added after printing and mounting. Having been working with this medium for more than 44 years, Twibell’s images are lively and colorful, capturing the exquisite details of nature.

During the 1970s, while living on Molokai, the Smithsonian Institute hosted an international juried Fish Print Traveling Exhibit. Twibell’s print was chosen as the poster announcing the world tour “Pressed On Paper.” He has had one-man shows at the Waikiki Aquarium, Che-Paste Restaurant in Honolulu, and galleries in Carmel, Calif. Some of his work has also been displayed in Japan at the International Fish Print Show.

The Kailua Village Artists Gallery is at 75-5729 Alii Dr., Suite C-110 in the Kona Marketplace. The gallery is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 329-6653.
