Volunteers needed for Puu Waawaa run

Volunteers are needed for the Run for the Dry Forest on Oct. 25.

The volunteers will work from 6 a.m. to noon. There are two types of positions available: Course marshals will direct runners, and first aid station workers will hand out food and drink to runners.

Volunteers will receive T-shirts. The number of volunteer spots is limited. For more information, email Elliott Parsons at eparsons@hawaii.edu.

The races are 10K, 5K run/walk and keiki run. Fees are $30 for ages 15 and older, $15 for 14 and under, and include T-shirts and refreshments. Fees go towards the conservation and restoration of dry forests at Puu Waawaa.

Free tennis lessons at Holua

Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village is offering free tennis lesson Saturday.

Three lessons are scheduled: 8-9 a.m., 9-10, 10-11, and will be taught by Don Guluzzy, a pro certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association.

Players of all abilities are welcome. Participants must register in advance. For more information, call the Holua Resort tennis pro shop at 322-6090.

WSHLL baseball prepares for seasons

Nobu Yamauchi winter league

The Nobu Yamauchi U-18 girls RBI softball and 13-18 boys baseball teams are accepting teams or players to participate in their winter league.

The season runs from mid-October to mid-December. The softball games will be played on Sundays and baseball during the weekdays.

County presents Keiki Triathlon

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Hawaii Isle Police Activities League will hold the third annual Keiki Triathlon as part of the Mayor’s Health Fest 2014 on Oct. 18, at Old Kona Airport Park.

Children ages 7 to 14 are invited to participate in a miniature version of the Ironman World Championship: 100-yard swim, 3.2-mile bicycle race and 1-mile run. The 7- and 8-year-olds will race half those distances.

The entrance fee is $5 per child. Registration ends Oct. 3. Forms are available at county swimming pools, gymnasiums and other staffed recreational sites, or can be downloaded at hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation.

Waimea offers volleyball league

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, offers a age-group volleyball league from Oct. 14 to Nov. 19, Tuesdays and Thursdays in October; Mondays and Wednesdays in November. The games start at 4:30 p.m. at various gyms.

Fees are $10 payable to Waimea Athletics. Volunteer coaches are needed.

Waimea offers instructional tennis

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Waimea Athletics, offers instructional tennis at Waimea Park.

The free clinic, instructed by tennis pro Jeff Lewis of Hawaii Preparatory Academy, will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday. The clinic is limited to the first 12 participants in two divisions offered: ages 6-9 and 10 and older.

The Honokaa Waipio Challenge Marathon scheduled for Oct. 18 has been canceled.

HCC ‘Out n Back’ time trial

The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 22.2-mile “Out n Back Training Time Trial” takes place at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The course starts at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery, heads north on Highway 19, makes a U-turn at Waikoloa Beach Road and ends with a sprint to the finish line at mile marker 86. Registration is at the cemetery from 7-7:40 a.m.

Nonmembers and athletes of all abilities are welcome; membership is free. After the trial, there will be refreshments and giveaways at the “talk story station.”

Fitness paddleboard, canoe race

Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel will host the Hulakai and Da Hui Race to Fitness on Sept. 27.

The race, about 7.5 miles from Kapalaoa Beach to Hapuna Beach, is open to novice paddlers and elite racers. There will be a new Elite division for SUP and OC1; the top three finishers in men’s and women’s races will receive prize money.

HPA to host fun run/dog walk benefit

Hawaii Preparatory Academy invites runners, walkers, friendly canines and families to participate in the fourth Bieni 5K Fun Run and Dog Walk at 9 a.m. Sept. 28 on the school’s cross-country course.

Net proceeds from the event will fund the annual Bieni Kohler-Johnson ’83 Scholarship at HPA. Registration and pledges are available online at flpregister.com/102.

Entry fee is $25 for adults, $10 for students 10 and under, with a late fee of an additional $10 after Sept. 9.
