Kiholo workday planned Saturday

The public is invited to join The Nature Conservancy for a volunteer workday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kiholo Fishpond. The group will be revitalizing the fishponds of Kiholo by removing invasive vegetation from the pond edge and clearing old debris.

A potluck lunch is planned for noon. Beverages and rice will be provided. Volunteers should bring a hat, sunscreen, bathing suit, hiking boots, water shoes, gloves, protective clothing, water bottle, hand tools and a beach chair.

Reservations are due today and can be made by emailing rmost@tnc.org. Directions and details will be emailed the day before the event.

Child safety seat checkups Saturday

A child safety seat checkup event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. This event is hosted by a coalition of the Hawaii Fire and Hawaii Police departments and community, using the National Child Passenger Safety Certification Program. The checks will be offered at the Pahala Fire Station, 96-1145 Kamani St.; Kailua-Kona Fire Station, 74-5537 Palani Road; Waikoloa Fire Station, 68-1771 Puumelia St.; and Waimea Fire Station 67-5175 Kamamalu St.

Each site location will have a “win a free car seat” prize drawing.

Beach cleanup slated Saturday

Hawaii’s “Get The Drift &Bag It!” is being held statewide on Saturday. This year is the 29th year volunteers have collected debris and data during the annual International Coastal Cleanup in Hawaii.

This event, organized by the Ocean Conservancy each fall, mobilizes volunteers to take action for the ocean, both by cleaning up debris and by documenting the types and quantities removed, to add to an international database, which helps the Conservancy track progress and problem areas in the fight against trash worldwide.

Kailua Village hosting luau Saturday

The Kailua Village Business Improvement District is bringing the community back Hawaiian style to Kailua Village with an oceanfront luau on the Kona Inn lawn. Slated for Saturday beginning at 6 p.m., the luau will feature food and Hawaiian entertainment, including Hilo’s Darlene Ahuna, a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award winner, including Female Vocalist of the Year.

Individual tickets are priced at $35 with reserved tables of 10 at $400 and available at historickailuavillage.com.

The event is sponsored by the Kailua Village Business Improvement District, Hawaii Tourism Authority and Hawaii County.

Organic solution to coffee borer is topic

Harry Arakaki of Organa Agriculture Hawaii Inc. and Kona Goes Green will share information on eradicating the coffee borer beetle with Beneficial Active Micro-organisms, an organic, chemical-free, safe and environmentally friendly product. His topic is “Sharing is Carin.” There will be time for questions after the presentation.

The meeting is 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Holualoa Elementary School cafeteria. The public is invited to the free event.

Marine Corps League meeting Saturday

The Camp Tarawa Detachment 1255 of the Marine Corps League meets Saturday at Banjy’s Paradise Bar &Grill at the Waikoloa Village Golf Course. A no-host lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., a business meeting follows at 1 p.m. All serving, retired or reserve Marines and Navy corpsmen and their spouses are invited to attend. Dress is resort casual.

Volunteers sought for pier cleanup

The public is invited to join the crew of Jack’s Diving Locker on Saturday for an underwater and shoreline clean up at Kailua Pier. Tank rental is free for divers who want to participate. Divers should make dive buddy arrangements and transportation to the pier. Nondivers are welcome to the shore cleanup and for topside support.

Estate planning seminar slated

Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union hosts a free seminar, “How To Protect Your Assets From Nursing Home Costs,” from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center Training Room at its Kaloko facility.

Aloha Quilters of Kona meets Saturday

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the West Hawaii Health Clinic, located on the corner of Hualalai Road and Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. New members, novice quilters or “old hands” are welcome.

Scouts planning pancake breakfast

An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and silent auction fundraiser will take place from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Hongwanji social hall in Kealakekua. The event is sponsored by Kona Hongwanji Cub Scout Pack No. 12. The cost per ticket is $7. Children age 5 and younger are free.

The event raises funds for the cubs’ activities for the year.
